;) Nothing 'new' there -- being doing it for 37 years --- it's called caravanning! We live as well in the van as we do at home, always have. Spend 150ish nights in the van per year, ie - it's our second home - so we live in it as we do at home. Why should anyone 'rough it'?

My goodness, you are so lucky to spend that much time in your caravan! I bet you could share some great advice about having the perfect experience. What are your 'must haves' in the caravan? Would love to hear more... :)

38 years makes me feel a newcomer at 29 years. We live well in the caravan but our luxury is mainly treating ourselves to the best food when away. Just back from Troutbeck Head and great farm shop on the A66 just before you turn off for the site.

Our caravan is our home from home with a fixed double bed, large end washroom and shower, and a double wardrobe.
We never 'rough it' and we can often eat out at good carvery restaurants found via the laptop and based on local recommendations for less money than it would cost to cook a similar meal.

Hi gabsgrandad, although I keep the equipment levels very basic in my 'van (to help keep the weight to a minimum) I don't feel I'm 'roughing it' at all! I just enjoy having a different view from my windows, and having the chance to explore new places, meet different people!

We did roughing it in a tent, a trailer tent and a motor home ( before anyone disagrees, try 6 people in a 5 berth, 6 metre motor home). Caravanning is different. Memory foam mattress, fixed bed, wine in fridge, chocolate in the cupboard, teenager at home with big sister. Fantastic. Just wish we could go out as often as gabsgrandad.

......my take on Glammavanning is to be able to pitch up down near Malaga for five weeks at the start of the year and consign a chunk of the UK winter to the dustbin :cheer:

Not sure about the 'Glam' bit as there always seems to be something to fix on either my van or someone elses.

Things have changed dramatically since my first van in 1966 (and maximum 2 week holidays). For last 15 years have been able to spend around 150 nights/year away mainly in Spain New Year to Easter and France in the Autumn.

As others have said, try to live well at home and away. perhaps biggest single difference has been introduction of fixed beds - making up beds 150 days or the year does take the edge off the 'glam' a bit.

Introduction of cassette loo's for those who like to use their own facilities was a pretty good change from 'bucket and chuck it' too, as was balanced flue heating rather than open flame gas fires in a van with single glazed (glass) windows.

Fridges we had in the 60's and today they are bigger but more complicated. Water heaters - great too.

Construction standards - better but still not as good as they should be given the changes in technology.

TV and satellite - OK but the site social life seems to have suffered - far less walking about in the evening chatting to folk - all inside watching whatever.

Technical = better chassis and brakes, no more solenoid operated reversing catches. Motor movers a particular boon to those not as young as they used to be.

Design - largely a matter of personal opinion, but you do sometimes wonder if those who ;design' a caravan have ever spent even a few days living in one, or trying to sort out some of the more common problems which crop up. (Location of power units, poor wiring diagrams, window catches behind raised sink lids, awning rails along the top of door frames so you can't slope the awning down from the van: when will they ever learn as someone once sang ?)

BUT - am I still addicted after 46 years ? will I go on doing it as long as I can ? You bet !!
