The energy "wasted" from a conventional bulb is lost as heat, considering that we have the heating on ~50% of the year, is this energy really wasted?.

No doubt we could have all sat huddled around a covantional light bulb for warmth, by the time the have taxed us to pay for all the green issues.

We'll need global warming or we'll all freeze the way fuel costs are going ;-)

Lutz " I really think it's time to stop arguing (and I mean on a global basis, not between contributors to this forum) who is to blame or what proportion of the problem is natural effects or man-made and start getting our fingers out and doing something".

Sorry Lutz but that is naive. Before people will change they need to know that what they are going to sacrifice will really make a difference. At this moment in time that is Not the case.It is no point becoming the Greenest if you are alone, you will end up both Cold and Broke, whilst the World goes on to the End. Neither you or I or anyone else knows what the outcome will be. So please stop worrying about it. Iran may have nuked Israel in the next 10 years and then we will have real Global Warming. You are worrying to much about something we can't change ??? Will all this nonsense slow Global Warming Down or Stop it, Reverse it or what??????. I have yet to see an " Expert" view on that .

I'm afraid I just can't sit back and take it for granted that it's something that can't be changed, whether reversed or at least slowed down. It seems to me that by the time everything has been proved beyond doubt, it'll already be too late. For me, the mere speculation is sufficient. I'm not worried, I'm scared, not so much for me but for my children and the generations thereafter. I don't want to be driven into panic action but I do feel it's my duty to do my bit, whether anyone else follows or not and preferably before the government forces me to anyway.

Lutz you only have to drive down OUR roads and even the narrowest of lanes to see we are the sick man of Europe when it comes to rubbish. Infact the whole country is an open rubbish dump/sewer. Its a vicious cycle, in the winter when plant life has died down you can see our verges are littered with everything imagineable, and I'm not talking about fly tippers who are the scum of the earth. Thankfully new growth comes in the spring which hides it, that is until it's mown later in the summer then all the mangled, chewed up rubbish is thrown into view again.

Our towns, inspite of local councils cleaning efforts, are the filthiest, there are third world countries cleaner. The countries recycling efforts are pathetic, plastics, tins etc are collected fortnightly but if I take any larger plastics like sheeting to the refuse centre it goes into landfill skips.

Just walking around town you see mothers unwrapping sweets for their children then throwing the wrappings on the floor, all the pavements are covered in discarded chewing gum. Drive behind someone and the window comes down and out goes a cigarette packet or fast food container. Graffiti is everywhere from paint aerosol cans (culprits who are caught should be made to clean it off with their tongues then the can shoved up their jacksy). One problem that I'm pleased to say is a lot better where I live than it was 10 years ago is dog dumps all over the place, but there are places I've visited where things haven't changed. You only have to go on a dog walk at a caravan site to see what I mean. Lots of people have no pride in where they live or how they live so why should they give a dogsdump about global warming or recycling. Sorry Lutz, I'm in your camp but in the U.K. a lot of people either aren't prepared to be educated and take pride in their surroundings or are too bone idle.

I'm sorry Braykewynd, your not living in the same country as us here in the UK. You don't understand filth in the street until you have been to China, and seen the pollution in the Rivers. If my country was as bad as you say yours is, I would be looking to move as quickly as possible. It makes me very sad that you can't hitch up your caravan and go off to some place that has grass which is Green, and which has Sky that is Blue. You sound like an eco warrior, here in China and India we need people like you to help us. Why have your political elite just woke up to climate change??? in fact are you sure climate change is not just Nature.

As a family I think we are fairly "green". None of us eat meat, we grow a lot of our own food. I don't drink so no energy wasted producing bottles for me so I can take them in my car to be recycled . We have low energy bulbs and thermostats on every radiator heated by our "energy efficient" boiler. As we replace domestic items we choose more efficient ones. We recycle all our waste and even send cardboard boxes etc to the school so the kids can reuse for art . We haven't flown for years choosing to holiday in the UK. Our garden is chemical free and visited by birds , rabbits , squirrals and deer.

So all in all I think we do our bit for the environment, and yet today my wife returns to her car, a 10 year old diesel Maverick, owed by us for over 9 years, used for towing and her transport as a Community Psychiatric Nurse (care in the community , whatever the weather ) to find a "parking ticket" on the screen saying it was illegally parked because.......

.... it was a " 4X4 "

How sad some people are to have such a blinkered attitude . I don't believe in the hype on global warming, just another money making exercise, however I do respect the environment, just the way I was bought up I suppose.

Frank you need to get real and get to the opticians if you can't see the filth in the verges, what the hell are you doing driving? Get your eyes tested man and stop driving before someone suffers.

Again you misread my post, probably again due to your poor eyesight. Who the hell mentioned China or even the world with the exception that SOME third world countries are cleaner but then again you probably know better ;O).

I said quote "we are the sick man of Europe when it comes to rubbish".

Now please, please Frank, next time you decide to be clever and pull me down (not the first time is it mate?)get your facts right and inwardly digest what I posted before posting your drivel. If you want to debate an issue try doing it like a man without the insults.

If there was such a huge problem with global warming and it was conclusive that it was down to mankind, i would expect our government to take drastic measures to at least try to slow down the problem. What do they do? They introduce all manner of "green" taxes. And these "green" taxes are always at a level that is easilly affordable to the majority of the public. The 4x4 VED license increase is a good example -

You have been calling yourself a Lord for to long now you think it's real. I do live in the same country as you, been to the park lately seen how nice it is???. I don't know what county you live in but I am glad I don't live in it. As for the remark about China and India they have real filth, not the perceived version you have of it. I can see why Toni wants rid of you lot!!!!!!!!!!!

The UK governments plans really hit the front page headlines and the commentary columns in the newspapers over here today. The reaction on the whole was very positive. Many lead articles expressed the hope that the German government will follow suit as quickly as possible.

Lord B., I have to admit is right in what he is saying regarding the state of Britain compared to other parts of Europe, (notice I did not refer to this country as Great Britain). Brittany area of France is beautiful - no form of litter, whether it be man made or animal excriment. Also the roads are wonderful, no For Sale notices littering up the scenery, etc. etc. We are, in my opinion, the dirtiest country in Europe.

As far as the political parties are concerned they are all bowing down to the so called green people. As Millies Dad pointed out if they cannot predict what will happen tomorrow what faith is there to believe thier prediction for the next 100 years. Get real and face the facts that the politicians are only putting a front on to satisfy their so called image and to take more money in the form of taxation under the issue of "look what we are doing to help to conserve the world, aren't we good". What a load of b******s. I am glad that I will not be around to hear the farcical rubbish they will be spouting in 100 years time. It is bad enough to listen to them now. Labour, Conservative, Lib. Dems. etc. - put them all on a cruise liner, send it out to mid Atlantic and use it as target practice for out naval submarines. Or would this pollute the sea.

Well if the German government wants to follow ours god help

us ;-)

I noted yeasterday that for us to cut our carbon emmisions in line with the proposals we will not be seeing Lutz again as you will have to give up your car and there will be no air travel and you'll be very cold as you would have to do away with your household heating and your electrical goods apart from many other things that they pointed out.

Once again we have Blair's crew spouting crap for headlines and the "Arnie" and the Germans love it.

Get me on th firt gas guzzler out of here.

No doubt Blair and Co will be rejecting any future income and seats on "boards" that might just be linked to the proposals and the industry that will grow from them ;-)

Cris - I assume that you were jocking when you said that Mr. Blair would not accept any seat on a company board whitch went agaists the ethics of being "green". He and his wife will be accepting money from any source they can lay their hands on - they have a life style to live up to and many friends abroad who will be offering them "free" holidays. Imagine Mr. Blair rowing his wife and family across the Atlantic to Sir Cliff Richard's house in Barbados.

I was saying that Blair and Co should not accept any form of earnings from any source that is linked to his governments green proposals if that is what you're asking Colin.

But who would bet that they will not?

But then again I feel that I'm more Honourable than most politicians ;-)

Not hard is it.
