Goodbye Freelander 2

What a big mistake Land Rover made when they decided to stop making the Freelander 2 - a great tow car. They have replaced it with the Discovery Sport, which is out of our price range now and I would imagine, a lot of other caravanners too, so, with the 3 year warranty coming to an end, we have reluctantly sold ours and have bought a Kia Sorento and take delivery next week. The Kia 7 year warranty clinched it and with the 6th & 7th seats folded down flat, the boot space is enormous. Another small detail we noticed, is that the sun visor has an innovative pull-out piece on the end for that time when the sun shines through beyond the end of the visor and catches you in the eyes, something that has always irritated us, so well done for thinking of that Kia. So goodbye Land Rover :( and hello Kia :)

Same thing is happening with the Discovery 5 much dearer than its the D4, however Land Rover must be doing something right, Discovery Sports sales are double that of the Freelander 2.

The Land Rover ranges do seem to be getting very expensive and I do wonder if a more budget range would help sales. They seem to be aiming at the prestige market though and might feel a lesser model would downgrade the whole range.

I like to think that the moving of the Discovery rangr upmarket is to make room for the Defender range maybe starting as low as £20,000. Well one can hope.

I had to chane a Merc E Claa for Freelander 2 four years ago and thought I was not going to like it, but have to say that apart from being very much more thirsty and having less space it's pretty good. I too am sorry to see it dropped from the range.
I think the stylists have taken over most makes noy and all favour round bulging lines which limit visibility particularly to the rear. Apart from poor reliability and old engines the style of the original Disco and Range Rover still appeal to me but there does not apper to be a situp and beg with nice big windows on the market today

Wish I could but too big for garage and more importantly wallet. But it's just the shape I like. The previous Merc. GLK was just right too ( nearly) but they didn't make RHD version and lost out badly to BMW X3 of the same generation as a result.

I've often wondered the cost of purchasing the cars I've had over the life of the G Wagon, that is still in production. From a pure man maths point, a G Wagon would have been the lower cost option overall. I know of a G Wagon that has had the same owner for the past 26 years, looks immaculate, is used as a daily runner, tows like a train. There is the classic story of the one that went around the world, literally, and did over a million Km by an owner who retired and just did it.

My 4 consecutive Mercs have list prices of £210k alone, done c400k miles. Should have got a G63 all those years ago :p Only £163k for a fully loaded one currently :p
