We're off on a rally this weekend and the rally site is just outside a village in Gloucestershire.

As usual I had a look at the surrounding area via Google Earth and switched from the map to the satellite view and zoomed in. (It always pays to make sure that the site is not too close to railways, rural based haulage firms or remote meat processing plants before deciding to go)

I've found that by dragging the new feature which is a gold coloured figure onto the road that I'm about to travel down I can 'drive' along the route by double clicking on the picture of the road.

Using a combination of this and the direction arrows I've had a good look round the village, 'found' the village hall where Saturday's social evening will be held and most importantly ensured that the route that I've chosen will be suitable for my outfit with no tight corners or narrow hump backed bridges to worry about.

When planning a trip in future Google Earth will provide a valuable tool help to avoid sat nav blunders.

I saw this was available for a CL we've booked in Devon. I wasn't too happy with the narrow road we'll have to navigate on the way in. Hasn't put us off, but left me apprehensive.

It is a great way to do a bit of a reccy for all the reasons described by Parksy.

My friends and I got quite a shock when we google street viewed our area. My friend was getting shopping out her car boot!! The other seen right in one of her windows. We are all now a bit wary of these googlemen going about. I was safer cos we have very tall trees round our garden but my friends are saying the googlemen have helicopters

Thanks to parksy, my interest in google earth, and street view, has been rekindled.

For some reason i have been having problems with it, so i have uninstalled, and reinstalled. Now i have the desk top icon again, so all is fine.

I must say its very impressive, from two or three camera shots, i can see all my house and garden! Due to my corner plot position, the back garden shot is over a seven foot hedge!

Don't you find the street view intrusive l can clearly see me stood in the lounge, one good thing they have blocked the number plates out, bet the authorities version is different though.

I agree with NGH that Google street view is not only intrusive but an invasion of privacy.

I found that they had a picture of my wife and my car and a view directly into my house.

I used the report button on the website to insist they removed the picture as it was an unauthorised publication and a breach of privacy.

They did remove it.

So, if you dont want your privacy invaded, tell them to remove the offending picture.

"googlemen have helicopters" they might well have helicopters but for street view that would be hardly of any use, the idea is you can see a horizontal view of the street, not a vertical one so you will found its a man with a camera doing the picture taking at street level.

No Damien I believe it is not an invasion of your privacy, it may well be somewhat intrusive but that's all.And as you say google do give people the option to remove said intrusion.Which is more than say the BBC would do if they were filming a story outside your home......

as soon as you step foot outside your home your are in a public area and "privacy" is no longer applicable.

There is a possibler chance that you coould have your image removed under the data protection act,but only if you were abled to be identified by the image. H

However if you are photographed or your image is recored from a public place while you are in your home then the matter is entirely different.

Google does not intentionally take images of anyone inside their home and as noted will remove the images immediatley they are asked to.

good point ray, agree on that one.

i never used it until i read this thread, my house is shown by a picture that must be at least 3 year old. i can see the old car we had in the drive.

as i said, hadnt used it till now, but i think its a good piece of kit, could be useful in many ways.

The camera van has been at lest twice to our street.

The last time 2009 after june, our sunroom was finnished then and we were away in the van.

Previous pictures not sure on the date, but about two years ago.

i have used the street cameras to view the house my lad has a offer on, excellent coverage.

I find Google Maps excellent as you can view the route into sites you have booked i.e. avoiding narrow lanes, lanes with overhanging trees etc. I realise you cannot gauge the height of the trees but it does help. Also looking at the location of the entrance of the site to ensure you don't miss it and then have to turn around with the van on the back.

I found the image of my house on the street view and as I keep my caravan at home on the drive I asked google to remove this view as I felt it gave the unscrupulous thief a head start in knowing what the 'van is and the security upon it.

They must have agreed with my comments as the image was removed within 36 hours. Thank you to google.

If you don't like what you see, just click on report a problem and follow the steps on screen. If they agree with our reasoning then it will be blocked.

Having read this thread, I was prompted to have a look at our road, that previously was not accessible to street view. As I work from home, and have deliveries and collections, I happened to be outside loading a large Curtain Sided wagon on our path. I then noticed the camera car, but there was not much I could do about it, but wait and see. This I did today and there I am along with the wagon, however I doubt that a request to remove the wagon will be successful.

Best regards,

George

i wonder if i can remove my cars number plates?

After all my wife is driving it at the moment, and i wouldn't want any one to see my number plate??

And as a bonus we could speed through all the road cameras!

My comment about the googlemen and the helicopters was just my friends and I having a laugh as you have to do with life sometimes.

Fair enough driving around showing off your number plate but it`s great people have the right and the freedom and the choice to have personal details to them removed if they feel that is their instinct to what is right/best.

LB, of course you are not worried - Street View must still be miles from the stately pile!

Cheers

First of all Mike they would have to negotiate the lodge gates at the bottom of the drive. If they manage that there is still the drawbridge and portcullis to overcome :O)
