Its to cut off the supply to all internal 12V when on tow(except fridge power and on later vans fridge electronics)

I'm not sure what you mean by jumpered it but if you want to override it you just need to cut the supply to the relay trigger which comes from the fridge circuit

I did this by inserting a switch on one van in 1996 but haven't bothered since

Thanks John,

Can I repeat the 2nd part of my question, 'What use is it' ?.

Unless I wired the car 12S socket incorrectly, it seems that I have to physically unplug that from the car before any 12V (except the Fridge) in the caravan works.

The use of the habitation relay ts to stop the caravan draining the car battery when the car engine is stopped, such as when taking a rest whilst travelling, or on a sea crossing.

Damian,

Thanks, I thought that's what the 'split charge re;ay' was for :)

As I said before its to cut off the van interior electrics for I would assume safety and convenience so that you could not accidentally drive off with interior lights etc still on

Damian with respect I can't see how it would be effective on a sea crossing because the car ignition would be turned off and so would the fridge feed and the habitation relay would be inoperative.

Regards

The permanent feed from the 12s plug goes via one of the habitation relays, i have about 5 in my 2004 bailey, four are used.

Should you frig/short out willy nilly, with out first tracing out the circuit which applies to YOUR van, then it is possible to flatten the car battery.

This is how my system works. When the car is connected via 12s, with the engine running the supply to the fridge is "live", this live also feeds the habitation relays, via one of these relays the caravan battery is charged.

So beware, you will always have a live supply to your van while the 12s is plugged in.
