Hi All

If you have a Swift caravan delivered in early 2006 with Matador tyres - get them checked.

Following this thread I checked mine aand fond cracks around the edge of the sidewalls. Took them to my local dealer who said immediately they have to be changed - and they have had quite a few like this on Swift vans of this date. No response yet from Swift who are closed for two weeks. There should be much greater publicity on this safety critical issue

I have been informed by my dealer that Swift will be writing direct to owners of Swift caravans which are affected. My own dealer will replace the tyres once a letter has been received. If you have Matador tyres I would check them immediatly.

Hi guys,

Matador tyres are standard fit on Eriba caravans - usually a 195/70 SR 14 on a 1000 kg, 1200 kg or 1300 kg axle or a 185/70 SR 13 on the sub-1000 kg axle.

So, on the assumption that the Matador tyre problem is a batch manufacturing fault - and probably related to one tyre size - in 2006, I'd be interested to hear what tyre size you've had problems with.

And can then post a warning message on our Eriba Forum

Hi again - an update

I have now had response from Swift on Matador tyres:

"In some instances between the DOT range 40/05 through to 46/05 the tyre side may develop side-wall cracking".

I assume the figures refer to the date of manufacture of the tyre, which is shown on the sidewall of the tyre. For example 4005 shows a tyre manufactured in the 40th week of 2005.

However, my tyres, which have developed cracking are 4905, which is outside the date range stated in this response from Swift.

Very interresting,I had a blow out on the M25 2 weeks ago, also wrecking the alloy rim.The van is a 2007 Abbey specky delivered in sept06,wonder if this was the problem?Cant remember the make of tyre as there wasnt any thing left on the rim!only the name stella on the spare rings a bell.Anyway cant get a new alloy for approx 8 weeks due to not in stock and Swift are on holiday, what a joke.Had to buy another steel spare in the mean time as I wont travel without one.

Will check remaing tyres at weekend when I pick up van for 3weeks break.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the feedback on the manufacturing dates - any idea what size tyres are involved or what you are using?

Regards, Robert

Hi guys,

I've posted an "inspection warning" on the UK Eriba forum, and then had a look at the forum of the Eriba / Hymer company web-site in Holland. http://www.eriba.nl (it's in Dutch)

Basically they have been discussing Matador tyres, and my translation and brief summary of the Dutch is that the forum discusses two issues:

1. Life expectancy of the Matador tyres - and that the good results from the 8000 km test by ADAC cannot be exactly carried over to real life - but this is true for all tyre tests - and nothing specific or unusual here

2. A question about the quality of the Matador tyres - with an answer from Matador that they are tested to EU standards - and a following note from the Eriba NL site saying that this was a diplomatic answer - the Dutch are very straight talking by the way, but in mitigation Eriba have no specific knowledge of issues with Matador tyres from their quality reporting system - and they would tell you if they did have such information.

There was a discussion about motor movers, fitted to a high percentage of Dutch caravans, which may be responsible for the few problems seen by a limited number of owners. But nothing specific or unusual in the number of reported incidents.

And an end note saying that from 2008 onwards, Eriba NL will be fitting the highly regarded (5 star rated) GT Maxmiler tyres to all Eriba caravans - this is a common fitment on "white vans" in the UK.

hi paul so what does that mean you have to fix your own tyres as swift are not interested in helping you

we have just received a letter back from swift with regard to another matter and i am not very happy with the service they provide.
