I have the 1.6 110BHP, and I tow about 850kgs. It is very happy at 60mph on the flat or gently undulating. We chugged up a couple of long non-motorway hills at 30mph in the French Ardennes this summer, but it was definitely hilly. Travelling from Delft to Rudesheim, towing at 50mph, we managed 48mpg - calculated properly, rather than from the computer. Beat that!

I have driven the 136 HDi in a 407 saloon, and it went like a piece of muck off a shovel. Should be good in the 307. Watch the noseweight though, as I think the limit is 60kg.

I have towed with a 307sw 2.0 HDi 110 bhp. Kerbweight 1421kg. Had no problems towing a 1250kg Dart. Max noseweight of the car is low at 60kg but careful packing it can be achieved. I thought the rear suspension was soft, when the caravan was on the car the top of the tyres disappeared into the wheel arch. I solved this problem by fitting the rubber spring assistors and it did improve the drive.

I had a 2.0 HDI SW 90bhp which was a superb solo car but pretty useless at towing a 1300kg Challenger. It was OK on the flat and downhill but the slightest upward slope meant changing down to second gear. The current 136 bhp diesel is a much better proposition but, of course, it is a lot more expensive to buy. I've now got a 2.2 litre Nissan X-Trail which is in a different league altogether.
