Has my gas run out?

Being new to this (got our caravn in Nov 2009) Im not sure how to tell if our gas cylinder is getting low. Anyway last week end we had been using the cooker no problem but on the way home we stopped and I wanted some toast but I could not light the grill. A few little flames came out but not all along the burner. I had used it for breakfast no problem. I tried a gas ring and this lit and burned ok. Is this a sign the gas cylinder is running out?
Thanks

Alan

its possible the jet for the grill is partially blocked. take out the gas cylinder and give it a shake , does it sound empty, can you hear anything sloshing about inside?

my experience with gas is that it pretty much stops coming out of everything at about the same time. If yur gas ring burned consistently (not just the little bit left in the pipe) for a few minutes or more, you have most likely got a blockage or something. You can weigh your gas bottle. someone will correct me if I've got this wrong, but the weight of the gas bottle is stamped on it near the top, and the weight of the gas when full is what you bought (eg 6kg).
If you have got gas left don't go messing about with gas installations unless you aare qualified!

Hello Alan,

The simplest check to see if a gas bottle is empty, is just as Philspaders suggests. if there is any reasonable quantity of lpg left you will hear and feel it sloshing around inside the bottle.

The reason you will hear and feel it is that both Butane (Calor Blue bottles) and Propane (Calor red Bottles) both turn from a gas into a liquid when held under pressure in a container. hence LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas.

If only one appliance is affected, then it is most likely a problem with the suspect appliance, not the gas supply.

Because of the question you have raised, it demonstrates that you are not an LPG gas fitter, and thus you will need to arrange to either take the caravan to the fitter or contact a mobile LPG engineer to investigate and fix.

I would recommend buying a gauge such as gaslow. They can work out expensive (but worth it IMO) or you could opt for a new calor lite cylinder (propane only) that comes with a gauge already on it (from memory the cylinders work out £2 or £3 more each that the standard propane ones).
