have you got a fixed bed?

Hi Jo-anne

We have a double axel Fendt and we would not buy a caravn without a fixed bed. The last 4 vans have all had fixed beds and it suits our life style and use of the van. We have noone else sleeping in the caravan so one of us can go to bed or have a private liedown during the day whilst the other can stil sit around the table end or even entertain.

There are lots of caravanners who would not entertain fixed beds but that is the reason there are lots of different designs and makes of caravan, as we are all different and use the caravan to our own needs.

You have to decide how you wish to use the interior and how many are using it and then just go for it....noone can really tell you which is the best for you.

Not sure that helps you but ask more questions if it does not!

Have a fixed bed burstner after years of non fixed bed Coachman vans. The compromise - unless you go for twin axle - is the size and form of the shower compartment, although threre are a few single axles with separate shower rooms.

Fixed beds are undoubtedly more comfortable than "make up" plus obviously less upheaval night and morning. Without getting personal, it also depends on the size and shape of the occupants, as most fixed beds have one corner cut away.

Best advice is to look at the Buying New part of the PC site, look at the layouts and get the brochures and then go and see the vans at a dealers. Tedious, but it's an expensive mistake to make.

We've got a Bailey Pageant Vendee (single axle). This has a fixed bed at one end, therefore the bathroom is down one side and is a bit cramped. Our last van was a Swift with an end bathroom, more space for ablutions but no fixed bed. This is the trade-off with most average size vans. If you have a suitable tow car, take a look at the Bailey Senator Wyoming (double axle), which has a fixed bed AND an end bathroom.

Both the Vendee and the Wyoming have an L-shaped lounge area, which makes them feel more spacious (in our opinion anyway). Good luck in choosing.

Hi Joanne, we have got the senator wyoming, as marcus said it is very spacious and is great to have the fixed bed and end bathroom. We had a pageant vendee, liked the L shape but the bathroom was a compromise. It really depends on several factors, what you are towing with, how many of you are using it, how often you use it and how much you can spend. Go to one of the larger dealers that has a selection of different tourers, you can then compare each one you like. Mark

Just taken our new Swift 540 out for its first trip this last weekend, our first fixed bed van...it is bloody fab!

No messing around at the end of a long day, just climb in. Its a firmish bed but I find thats good for me, I am 6'2" and no problems getting a good nights sleep.(the long suffering agrees too)

Its a single axle, we did not want a realy big van, top equipment levels...worth looking at.

Sadly, I cannot purchase a fixed bed caravan. My husband just would not fit on it. He is 6'4" (without shoes and socks). In many caravans he has problems simply standing up!!! Are his 'human rights' being abused by the caravan producers? My son is 6'8" tall - he has no chance of becoming a caravanner.

Seriously, however, good luck with your new venture in the van of your choice. I'm sure you will have wonderful holidays.

Hi Ann

My husband is 6'5" in his socks and we have a fixed bed in our caravan. I am 5'10" and I sleep on the inside, he sleeps on the outside with the cut off corner. It works very well for us, and we get a good nights sleep.

Sadly I havent got a fixed bed but would love one.....one day!

when we've saved our pennies I would buy a bailey senator wyoming with fixed bed and full bathroom,..oh and that means we would have to change our Freelander towcar too..so I would buy a Discovery 3 at the same time!!

hi Ann

I am 6ft 4in and have no problems in our Elddis Storm, it is paradise apart from the stupid 2/3 split for under bed storage from inside the van with the factory supplied mattress, this in my opinion is a real bad design flaw since under bed storage is easily available from the outside locker. Our soft mattress problem was easily fixed with a fully coil srung custom made mattress at a very reasonable

Hi

We got a single axle fixed bed last year as the other half has a bad back. We love it. WE mainly use sites without a toilet block and have got used to the small bathroom. Ours is a single axle and we find on the rare occasion we dont use the awning that floor space is rather limited. Without an awning there is also no space to put a bin. Drawer space can be limited as well so we use cutlery in a stand and place it in a cupboard for travelling.

After almost 30 years of using made up beds we would never go back to them again.

We are thinking of getting a fiama sun canopy for the rare occasions we dont use the awning and having it on the offside.

Anyone had experience of this at all?

Sarah, ours is silver, matches the green and silver flashing on our 'van. We didn't need the side steps as the suspension lowers itself to entry level. Great stuff!!!
