We had one bought for us a few years ago but felt it was too much faff to carry around and set up. Only once have we never had a good terrestrial signal and therefore couldn't watch tv. Our daughter currently uses the satellite tuner in her house as the tv aerial doesn't work but the pre-installed satellite dish does.

We have had one of the aldi/lidl kits for a good number of years. In the days of analogue signal it got quite a bit of use. But since digital times find very little use for it as digi signal seems to give much more national coverage .However we did eventually upgrade the dish to use with the same box, as we found the plastic dish of the original kit was a bit susceptible to wind vibration and a little more difficult to align than a bigger dish. However we did watch with the kit for a number of years, and still could if needed

We have had an Aldi kit for some years now. I made hardware so the dish assembly was clamped to the jockey wheel stem to provide a rigid mounting. Could pick up BBC etc in central Brittany with no problem!

Everyone enjoying the mini heatwave :woohoo:

Has anyone purchased the Aldi HD Satellite kit, and can provide any comments on it ?

I am looking to upgrade from our digi aerial, as on our last trip away it was a waste of time (Central / northern Scotland), unable to get any signal at all, so have decided to get a portable satellite system.

As I have researched it, the 2 main suppliers appear to be satgear or maxview, and both are consistent with their advice, that for a dish to be used across the UK, incl Scotland, it needs to be a minimum of 54cm diameter. The 65cm seems to be the suggested size for the "fringe" areas of the Highlands etc.

The Aldi version is only 38cm, so straight away I am concerned that it is only really suitable for England and Wales.

Anyone got any pearls of wisdom for a satellite novice ?
Thanks

The old Sky Zone 1 dishes were the equivalent of a 43cm ovoid dish; dishes for Zone 2 - essentially anywhere north of the A69 - was the equivalent of a 55cm ovoid.

Then they moved all national stations to Astra 2F which has a much tighter footprint on the UK for the same transmission power so effectively increasing the signal strength. Allegedly you now only need a 43cm dish anywhere in the UK.

Having said that I would buy (indeed have) a 60cm ovoid dish and it works at least 2/3 the way down France.

As far as I am aware the Aldi system is on free to air now I have to say it works . I am really looking back at when I bought ours and if they are the same today then beware as you can only save X number of channels into the right order. After saying that I did buy mine some years ago so check to see if they are on free to air. Another point as well if they havnt changde then if you have youngsters in the van while tuning in you will be finding some quite naughty channels on there . I repeat though mine is a few years old now so I am just making you aware of what might be.. If you live close to me I have one you could try free of charge .

Many thanks for the offer- I may have to pass tho` - I suspect we are several hundred miles apart :(

Assessing all available information, I think the Aldi set may be a good buy for E & W, but perhaps not so good for Scotland, I may have sourced a second hand maxview dish etc locally (will know definately tomorrow) but it doesnt have a receiver unfortunately. one step at a time
