Hi All

I have also been doing research on this subject for European Travel which we will be doing a lot of over the next five years now that I have taken early retirement.

Conclusion for me is that EHIC covers more than adequately across all the EU countries - go to the EHIC website and I have downloaded the details for each country I am visiting on our 3 month Grand European Tour.

Looked at Red Pennant and far too expensive IMO (they may be good but not at that price!!). Like Diane I took lead from Lutz and joined ADAC Partner Plus Euro 97 for myself and Wife for a whole year. Covers car and caravan (whilst towing) with second to none service coverage (including UK) so will save cost next year (dont care about double journey element).

As Lutz says above Partner Plus provides Air Ambulance service worldwide which is the only element that EHIC does not cover automatically.

All this just goes to further confirm the fact that "Rip off Britain" title is very much alive. We are part of Europe so lets take benefit from the much bigger organisations like ADAC who can do it at a good price.

After initial contact with ADAC via email as Diane states above they will send you a letter with application form which I filled in and included a signed letter to authorise payment via my MasterCard. Whole thing took about 3 weeks to receiving our ADAC cards. Can do it via their WebSite (English translation) and FAX card authorisation. I just felt more secure doing it by post.

Regards

Alan

Colleen it is up to you if you take out personal insurance, but your Land Rover cover will not cover your caravan.

I have a Hyundai with 5 years warranty / breakdown cover but it does not cover the van, should the car break down the van would be left at the side of the road.

We are in our 50s and in good health (touch wood) and have taken out Red Pennant for our 3 weeks in France.

Even if you have not had a fire or break in at your house, do you have household insurance? Better safe than sorry

Graham, thanks for your reply, and in fact this had crossed my mind and so I called Land Rover who confirmed that they would treat the caravan as the car and return the caravan home if the car could not be repaired, there's so many loopholes with insurance.

One year we took insurance with the AA and on the way back from France to the North East we stopped off at our daughters (Bromley) when we had a problem with the car, we were refused help from them as they said we had stopped off on route and were no longer on the original holiday nor were we IN EUROPE!!! Since when did we leave Europe, has the Continental Drift speeded up? Take car.

Hi Coleen

Land Rover may cover the caravan if there is something wrong with the car but they would not cover the caravan if it was just something wrong with it and not the car.

I would take out cover that covers the caravan just in case.

Cheers

Just a few more questions.

If your in France and you something goes wrong, where would they repat you to?

If something goes wrong before you catch the ferry are you covered?

General things like that, can anyone give a brief summary of these things?

Colleen

I think what the AA are saying is that normal AA membership covers this country and that the cover you had was for outside of the UK !!!!

But as for breaking your journey, if you travel from the south of France are you expected to come all the way home without stoping !!!!

I am glad that we have Red Pennant, it covers me from the time I leave home till I get back
