Good morning,

My friend and I require 28 camping cheques between us ( 14 each ). Where is the cheapest place to purchase these. Your help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I don't think you will find anywhere selling them cheap unless you look on e-bay but I suspect you would not get the number you want. As Clive says the Caravan Club sell them if you buy a crossing from them and they don't charge any surcharges. It might be worth looking at what the Camping Cheque website has to offer as they often do a crossing and three cheques thrown in which reduces the cost a bit.

Pat as you have already booked your crossing you will have to buy direct from Camping Cheques and they will impose a surcharge for just buying cheques and also apply a surcharge if you pay by credit card. You could investigate the gold or silver card but perhaps only really worth it if you intend to use cheques in the coming years.

If you need 28 between you then you'll probably have to buy them from Camping Cheques unless you find someone on one of these forums who's giving up caravanning and has a stock of them.

At the end of last year the Caravan Club were selling 2009 Camping Cheques at last year's price - but they are only accepted up until the end of 2010 and had to be bought with a ferry crossing.

You could also think about using Touring Cheques (accepted on different sites) at

As Val has mentioned the only likely source is someone who has spares from last year, and has decided not to go abroad this year, but thye will still wish some payment for them. Try E bay perhaps?

The other thing to look at is that the cheques will cost about

You can save up to 30 euros per night on the 'shoulder' of the season on some sites, ie for a few nights just before the site tariffs change. One site we've stayed on charges 45 euros per night up until the 22nd August, but takes Camping Cheques from the 18th. On the 22nd the price drops to 37 euros, so you're still saving 22 euros per night up until the 30th August.

Camping Cheques still cost

Yes, but if you wish to use a credit card to buy them, then there is a surcharge which takes the daily cost to

Aah I see - that's a bit sneaky! What do they actually charge you? I thought it was just a one off 'admin' fee?

We got an Electron card specially for buying 'travel' - Ryanair flights, or anything else which has a surcharge for 'normal' cards! It's been worth its weight in gold, as it cost us nothing anyway! We just put some money into the account as and when we need it.

Thank you for all your replies. Our intention is to travel down the east side of France, 6 days on the Med and back up the west side.( taking in some vinyards on route, as you do ).

You've certainly given us something to think about.

I do not know about Electron. There is no charge for debit cards evidently. Plus of course the admin fee so the more you order the cheaper they are. I just used a CC Visa card as at least there was some fall back, if anything went wrong. I have a Gold Card from Camping Cheques which is cheaper for admin fees, but of course you have to pay for the card to begin with. I guess you can add about 50p per cheque to cover the extra costs.

I also have a Bread card which is a Pay as you Go type Mastercard. I top it up at the PO and use it for internet shopping as they can only steal the balance, which is never that much. I do not trust Paypal as I have had a bad experience.

I also heard Ryanair were going to start charging for Electron as well, as they want all your cash which ever way they can. I do object to the so called budget airlines charging for a seat. Fair enough if you wish a special one, but just any old seat?? What do they expect, we are to hang from a roof strap for the flight?? I tend to use regular airlines, yes maybe a bit more expensive, but suprisingly not that much, but the seat is included as is your baggage and they serve tea and coffee as well. Plus if you miss a connection they pay the hotel.

I regret (no I don't) I avoid Ryanair like the plague. Starve them of cash and they may decide customers are important after all.

I did have a Paypal account for a while but closed it after discovering it had been accessed by a 3rd party and many debits were made. Paypal reimbursed everything, but I was concerned and felt removal of the account was the best option. It was accessed through some other channel outwith me, so it was not by a virus on my computer for example.

Camping Cheque never do special offers on the cheques themselves, only if you book a ferry/Camping Cheque package - when the offer may be 'three free Camping Cheques'. The only time you may get them as a special offer, is as previously mentioned, when someone is selling them on.

Still at

As Val has correctly stated Camping Cheques are a good way to ease the burden of site fees. However, do not use them as the sole means to decide your holiday travel. Often sites will give discounts for long stays and with the Euro at almost parity with the Pound, unfortunately the savings are nowhere what they were just a year or so ago.

I suggest plan your trip and contact the sites you plan to use, and see what they can offer. If the CC idea stil works out cheaper, then go buy them.
