I have Citreon Picasso 2.0 HDI with a kerb weight and a max tow weight of 1300kg(85%= 1105Kg). I want to buy my first caravan shortly, possibly an Abbey Zenith. This has a MIRO of 1060kg and a MTPLM of 1350kg. Could I tow this? If not what is my max limit?

My wife wants a caravan but I don't want to pay for a new car as well!

I am a bit surprised that you quote the kerbweight of your Picasso 2.0 HDI as 1300kg. I would have expected it to be a bit higher, close on 1400kg, according to the information I have available to me. However, the max. towload is 1300kg, as you say. I don't know what the permitted noseload is but assuming it to be around 75kg, there would be no problem with towing a caravan of 1350kg legally. You do appreciate that you would be well over the 85% recommendation but it cannot be described as a no-go situation. You'd just have to exercise a bit more care while towing.

This may be of help.

I have a 1.8 (120bhp) Picasso SX.

Citroen claim the unladen weight is 1245Kg (1300Kg for the 2.0 Hdi)

This is without fluids or driver as far as I am aware.

I have weighed my picasso on a weighbridge with almost a full tank of fuel, me and nothing else. It weighed 1420kg. I have also weighed it with a tank of fuel, wife and myself, three small children in car seats. a buggy in the boot and an empty 470 lt roof box fitted. It weighed 1600kg.

I would therefore assume that the 'real' kerbweight of the 2.0 Hdi must be around 1450 - 1500kg.

I would advise a trip to a weighbridge to confirm.

I also have an '05 VW Touran 1.9 TDI.

I have weighed it with just me and fuel on board and it was 1670kg. This is very close to the figure VW give in the manual for car with 90% fuel and driver.

I think the citroen figures may be a bit on the low side.

Regards,

Andy.
