Can you please advise a.s.a.p. please. The main connector was plugged in at least 48 hours if not more as had the fridge on overnight. Unplugged the mains this morning and nothing works. The battery seem to have died (I think). We dont have a spare but to go any buy one now would mean we cant take off today as that would need charging also. I cant think what else it could be...I do hope someone may be able to advice to see if I am doing soemthing totally wrong....fingers crossed..

Hilda,

Do you have a switch on your control panel with 2 or 3 positions.

Usually Car-Off- Caravan?. If so make sure it is set to caravan.

Do you have a display which shows the battery voltage?. You usually have to press a switch to activate the display.

Check the main fuse from the battery.

Connect to the mains and switch your battery charger on. Does the 12 volt system now work?

Hope this helps.

Hi Hamer

Everything you have mentioned I have checked. The control panel by the door did have the master switch as ON. I think this may be the cause and I have drained the battery. However I did have the mains pluged into the van for a few days as I had a dehumidifier in the van for 3 nights. I took that out yesterday and turned the fridge on to cool ready for the off this morning agai using the mains not the battery. I did not unplug the mains until this morning either. Hubby has taken the battery out of the van and has taken it to our local dealer to test and to also buy another new battery (We need a spare anyway). Fingers crossed I will still get away today.

Hilda,

If the 12 volts work with your new battery i would check to see if your charger is working.

First switch off the charger. If it is fully auto and on all the time with no switch in the system then disconnect the mains.

Then switch on ALL the 12 volt lights in the caravan.

If the charger is working, when you switch the charger back on the lights should become brighter.

I would check the charger as in most caravans even with a flat battery with the charger on the 12 volt system should operate.

If you have a digital display, with the charger on you should get a higher reading.

Hope this helps.

Hilda, unless your caravan has been specially (re)wired you should not be able to run the fridge off the caravan battery. In the 'van it works on mains or gas only - it runs from 12V supplied from the car when towing but should never run off the 'van battery alone.

I would suggest a small multi-meter to carry in the van, then you can check voltages accurately. I got one from Lidl/Aldi a few weeks ago for

Hi Hilda

I had a problem with my charger and called the caravan repair people for a quote on a new one, some were talking silly money. I went on ebay and got a replacement at a fraction of the cost and fittedit myself, its not hard as all the connections are the plug in type.
