I have been a keen camper (under canvas) for most of my life, but have recently been offered my inlaws caravan, which is a Swift Sillouhette 2 berth from around 1995 / 96. My current car is a MK3 Ford Mondeo hatchback 1.8 petrol, registered in 2001 (51 reg).

Does anyone know if this car is suitable for towing this caravan? The handbook lists kerbweight as 1384 - 1439, & permissable gross weight of 1875.

Also I passed my driving test in 1997, after the new regs for towing were introduced, so do I need to upgrade my licence to tow a caravan?

You don't say what the maximum weight of the caravan (otherwise known as its MTPLM) is. Without repeating here the conditions that apply regarding the technical legality of towing and the driving licence requirements, I suggest you read the Section called Legal Issues of Towing on the homepage of this website, first.

If you stick to all that is said there, you should be OK with your existing driving licence.
