Help ! Which Manufacturer

Just got new tow car & wanting removable towbar been quoted for a towsure one & a witter one very little difference in price which one would you have fitted ?

In the past when i have compared towbars, the towsure has come out second best to the witter, but is usually cheaper.

Having said that the witter i have bought for the xtrail, does not impress, as normal

Witter has the reputaion but are you planning on them fitting it, and doing the wiring or is this a home assembly deal. If the latter then the Towsure will be cheaper but you are going to be responsible for making sure it all is fitted correctly, and that can be more difficult than it sometimes seems. Some cars encourage an easy fitting, others are difficult.

scotch lad

both prices i have had is fitted the towsure price is the same if i go to towsure or have the same fitter that will fit the witter, i would never fit my own if anything went wrong her who is to be obeyed would have a birthday !!!!

The part that holds the fixed ball. It's held by two small bolts onto the main cross member. Looks like a potential weak point. Usually Witters looks solid.

Other than that its ok.

I always give the tow bar a couple of coats of smooth black paint, always find some part off the bar thats not coated properly, and the way this one was packed is poor, metal on metal contact while in the box, had chipped some of the paint off.

I've done this on the last two cars, and not a sign of rust on either bar after 4 years.

Note i was totally happy with the design of the last xtrail bar.

If I understand Ray correctly those two bolts allow you to replace the towball with a detachable fitting (and maybe other options). I'd be very surprised if Witter had got the strengths wrong.

Having said that, the sweep of the towball bit under the rear bumper is a bit ugly and reduces ground clearance. Saves cutting the bumper though. A detachable ball would get over that.
