Helsinki and further north

I'm planning to visit a friend in Finland, probably in late October or November. Yes, I know it'll be dark and cold.

I'll probably be going via the Netherlands, and I was thinking of taking a ferry from either Rostock or Tallinn to Helsinki. The friend lives in Kuopio, which is a few hundred kilometres to the north-east.

I'd appreciate any and all advice about such a trip, and especially experiences with sites in or around Helsinki and Kuopio.

I'm a caravanning novice, by the way.

I don't have any experience of camping in Finland (only been there once and that was without the caravan), but I do know that only a handful of sites are open during the time frame that you are looking at. Most sites are only open from the end of May to the end of August. Helsinki would be OK but the site near Kuopio is shut.

ps: Certainly in November you will need to be prepared for winter weather. In particular, this means winter tyres not only for the car but also for the caravan.

Thanks, Lutz. I think I'll wait until spring. The only pressing reason for October/November was the urge to use my new caravan on a long trip, and the fact that I'll be too busy before then.

Thanks again.

This one looks good: http://www.kuopioinfo.fi/rauhalahti/english/leirinta/index.php

As Lutz said, it doesn't open until end of May.
