Hi all and some damp questions

Hi all and thanks for having me on here.

My wife and I have just got back into caravanning after a few years break. We've only spent £2,000 on this one and went away in it for the first time last week. It's a 1998 Swift Challenger 520SE.

It was pretty cold so we had the blown air heater on full and it tripped out. I know about the reset switch behind it so I took the draw out and thumbled around until I found it and reset it. While I had the draw out I noticed some of the vinyl wallpaper had curled over at the back of the cupboard. I got my torch on it and to my horror, after feeling it, it was very wet to the point where pressing on the wall behind the vinyl squeezed water out like a sponge.

I thought I was pretty good when it comes to checking for damp before buying but I didn't check behind the fire as I'd never expect it to be there. Silly me. The van was sold as seen and apart from this problem the van is very clean. There is no damp smell at all and looking outside all the normal water ingress places look good. The only thing I might ad is that the main window on that wall leaked a bit when it absolutely poured down. Not a lot but certainly a few drips.

I've since bought a damp meter which is showing into the 40's on that wall but only in the area where it feels wet. I've also checked the cupboard in between the cooker and the fridge and that wall is also spongy.

Anything above cooker height is dry reading a mere 10-18%

I plan on repairing this myself but hoped I could get some useful tips from people on here. I'm pretty DIY savvy but never done anything like this before. I presume I'll need to rebuild the timber and wall board once I've found and sealed the leak.

Thanks again and sorry for the long first post.

Cheers

Gaz

Thanks Brian,

Once I got over the initial shock it didn't take me long to realise that it's a job well worth doing as the rest of the van is very clean.

I'll also learn a thing or two about caravan builds.

Hi Gaz, big welcome to the forum sorry to hear of your problems but with your attitude I'm sure you can remedy it
just allow plenty of time, and if you cant find the leak before you begin take it easy when you start to dismantle the van the wetter it gets the closer you get, and as you said sensible to source and fix the leak before putting every thing back.
This is one I did a few years back Cick Here Damp Repair

Most of the parts were sourced from OO learys they use to deliver the board but now see you have to collect or arrange your own courier, good luck and ask away if you havve any other questions.

That's an impressive repair Kev. You're not in the Lancashire area are you lol.
I'm actually looking forward to doing it.

I will keep a photo record of the work and in a couple of months(hopefully) I'll put them on here. Might take a bit longer though because I'm in the process of fitting a bathroom at home.

Thanks for the warm welcome all. Sometimes you just need to talk and what better place to talk about caravans than here.

Cheers

Hi Gaz

Welcome to the forum.

Where about's is the heater situated in the van ? the area that you have found the damp at the back of the heater is that near to the wheel arch ?

If you take some photos and post them it will be easier for people to advise you...

How to post photos

I'm an Essex boy but married a Lancashire lass and moved up here. Miss the south but she's well worth it.

I'll take some pics at the weekend as the van is in storage now. I'm thinking wheel arch also as the wet is all at the bottom and none at the top. The heater is probably about a metre to the right of the wheel arch but it looks like the length of the kitchen area has damp. The wheel arch sits in between the fridge and cooker.

Check that the fittings for the sink are ok and there are no water leaks, has it got a new tap fitted or is it the original one ?

Check that the plastic wheel arch is all in one piece with no splits or cracks..

Have a good look at the lower awning / draught skirt rail for corroded screws either side of the wheel arch.

On your window that is dripping check that the rubber seal is clean and ok & that it is pulling tight back to the window frame, it might just need adjusting.

I believe the taps are original. It's the same style as the bathroom tap at least.

The leak on the windows are a mystery. It's coming in from the top of both windows. You can feel a breeze coming through. I didn't know there was any adjustments options. It is almost as if the windows isn't tight enough against the seal at the top. Can these be pulled in tighter then?

If they can't be adjusted you can get new seals ;)

Is there a trim strip that goes full width above the windows, if so have a good look at that and the screws for corroding ....

Most things can be done but miracles take a bit longer :eek:hmy:
