Hitch Covers

I'm curious as to why people use hitch covers (the ones used when on site). I'm not criticising anyone for using them it's just that I can't see the purpose myself. If they are to protect the hitch from getting water in then there doesn't seem any point as the hitch gets a good soaking when towing in the rain. If it's just to smarten up the hitch area when on site then fine - I can appreciate that some people might want to do that. Is there a practical reason I'm missing?

Most important to me is that it keeps any oil or grease of clothes and skin when 'fiddling' around in or near the gas box.

(Keeps passing inquisitive kids hands etc clean as well)

All of the above reasons work for me too, however, my main reason is my vanity, my nice burgendy leatherette hitch cover just sets the van off perfectly, its great for protection but makes the van look much cleaner cut and sleaker when it matches the colours of the van. i would never park without it.

I found the cover blew off unless tied on securely and then it harboured damp. Also it soon faded and looked tatty so I binned it. Likewise the covers for the black/grey sockets on the car encouraged condensation so I now rely on the spring loaded lids only. Just make sure to check the spring action from time to time.

My old cover was tasteless and tacky, (green with a welsh dragon on it), I replaced it with a colour coded burgendy one which has 2 nice adjustable clips which makes fitting seconds and doesnt involve me getting on my knees in the mud to tie a knot in the ropes. Well done Cardiff Caravan Centre.

I use my hitch cover for most of the above reasons and also to stop the birds from crapulating all over my stabiliser handle and a- frame, especially wag tails. They do it all of the time where we keep our caravan. ;)

I use mine to keep my ALKO Hitch a nice deep shade of red. Unlike the awful looking faded ones that have been exposed to the sun over many months. It looks nice and neat on site as well as keeping everything out of harms way.

We use our hitch cover to cover all the dirty bits that kids love to get at.

Also it is a visable guard at the front of the van. You'd be suprised how many unobservant folk there are on a site these days. Finally by covering the hitch lock a casual thief has no idea of the complexity of security and so will be more encouraged to move onto easier pickings.

We use a hitch cover as the alco hitch is red and if left in the sun for a long period it fades, have a look at your dealers next time. You will be able to tell which have had hitch covers fitted.
