Holiday insurance!!!

Has anyone gone away and used the travel insurance from their home insurance policies????

We're with Direct line read through and just a couple of quries which we will check.

But the FCO tells people to get insurance separately.

Do you have one?

If you look at the current thread I started a few weeks ago, the only thing that your household policy will do for you is to insure 'personal possessions' e.g things like cash, laptops, phones, cameras, etc. while you are away from home and then not always !

'Travel insurance' to me means things like recovery of car and or caravan, medical expenses, and so on - which is what things like Red Pennant from CC and other similar schemes from other Clubs and organisations do well. The German motoring organisation ADAC is very well spoken of too but is not quite as easy to sign up to as the others (although I can already hear the experts saying that it is, and I may well take the time and effort to find out soon).

How much covr you need for personal comfort is an individual decision. As the cost of recovery insurance goes up with my increasing years, I look at the market value of my 'van and sooner or later will stop insuring it, on the basis that the annual insurance premium is more than the value - break even is not far away !

I urge you to take time to work out exactly what you are covering, and the possible alternatives.

Ray S ADAC is very easy to join if you go to the page on them on my website you will see a number to ring in Germany which is an office where they speak English. You ring them ask to join, they take your details down and card number, they give you your membership number and then from midnight on the same day you are covered by ADAC. Papers will followin the post later. We used them last April and could not fault their service or help.

I too have joined ADAC, to a large degree following recommendations on this forum. I wondered if any other 'signed up' members have had occasion to use the medical services offered within the policy and should welcome their comments on the effectiveness of the service.

I can heartily endorse Dianne's comments on ADAC.And a big advantage for many people is that they cover older cars and 'vans too.

As we travel abroad several times a year without the car and caravan, we have an annual travel insurance which costs something in the region of £40 for the 2 of us. We then take out Red Pennant breakdown cover for the 2 weeks or so we take the caravan to Europe. It's expensive, but worth it. We've used it twice and can't rate it too highly.
I wouldn't want to rely on household insurance. In my experience, insurers are always looking for any loophole which means they don't have to pay. I'd rather do a belt and braces and be certain!

Some years ago we had a very nasty Boating accident and had to claim for everything on the boat that was lost or damaged. The Household Insurance covered it and they paid out for everything very quickly Some years after that we had a caravan stolen and the same happened then everything covered and Insurance Company paid up instantly.
