Honda CRV

Just changed my 2.0 TDCI Mondeo for a new style diesel CRV and only towed a few miles with it before heading off to Italy in a week's time. Any comments regarding the new motor? Early signs are mpg at about 25 - is this typical?

CRV very smooth towing vehicle - power and torque tends to be at higher revs then previous car (x-trail) so you need to rev it to get going. 25mpg about right when worn in, but did dip to around 20mpg in France last summer with only a couple of thousand on the clock - it also took a gulp or two of oil too (light coming on twice on way toLyon. I was told this is normal until engine well used and it has not been a problem since. Lovely car all round and the most car like to drive out of all the SUV's I have had. Enjoy your trip (but take a litre or two of oil!)

Thanks Peter. The salesman was a caravanner and he told me about the oil, so have a 4 litre can in back!!

What MPG did / do you get solo & towing?

What type of tow bar have you got swan neck or straight, fixed or detachable?

My CR-V was new in August 07. MPG was disappointing at first Solo I only got about 25 - now I'm consistently getting 39 to 40 overall. I've only towed once as we moved to France for 9mths in mid September and left the caravan (a Bailey Pageant) at homeit's not a swan neck.

so can't comment. My towbar was fitted by Honda.

Solo I average about 35 - 36 mpg over a fairly mixed range of roads travelling about 10 miles twice a day. Nearer 39-40 when on a long trip as long as you keep to 65/70mph. towing poor at first (20) but now done 16000 miles getting about 25 mpg.

I had a witter detachable due to the parking sensors and being unsure as to their effectiveness with fixed bar. Witter a lot cheaper then Honda for same bar.

Overall good car but pathetic roof bar system where you have a T-slot system from Thule but lots of accesories do not fit because of Honda's oversized feet blocking the slot!

If you need roofbars get Thule set not Honda.

I own the new CR-V 2.2 Diesel, just completed 12000 miles.

I tow 1300kg, and get 43MPG Solo and 34mpg towing, I have never had to put in any oil between oil changes.

At 6000 miles I changed oil and filter using Millers fully synthetic 5-40 grade. I think the zero spec grade that Honda recommend like many others,ie VW cause heavy oil consumption but get the emmisions very low and the excellent 173co. It stated in their recent drive mag that the oil is for greater economy, but if you have to put in so much oil how can that be.

Honda probably only recommend the very light oil and it may infringe some part of the warranty, but I do all my own services and Honda never seem to have any warrenty issues anyway.
