How do you carry four bicycles?

As we now have a new (To us) tow car we thought we would invest in the necessary equipment to carry cycles but the whole process seems a little confusing to say the least.

We have a two year old Honda CRV (Without roof bars). It appears roof mounted systems have weight restrictions and cannot cope with four bikes, Tow bar mounted units eat into your nose weight allowance and I have been told that hatch / spare wheel systems can interfere with the van if on a tight lock (this from someone who had expensive first hand experience).

So question is how do you folks carry four cycles? At the moment it looks like two on the roof and two more Where?

Have you though of two bikes on the roof and two "out-riders" to escort you on your journey? - obviously you'll need to progress slightly slower than normal...

Question: Will you need to transport all four bikes on the car when you're at your destination? Or are the bikes just there to ride into town from the camp-site? And are all bikes the same size or could two be fitted inside the caravan?

As you've discovered your car handbook will list maximum loads for the roof, front and rear axle as well as the caravan tow-bar... Two "Halfords" bikes and a Thule carrier will eat the roof load limit.

The tricks I know from German caravans probably aren't transferable to a UK caravan - the lower nose-weight and longer A-frame mean that bikes can be carried on the caravan A-frame or on the tow-ball. But these are probably excluded on a UK caravan if your nose-weight is already close to the tow-bar limit...

Or two bikes on the rear of the caravan, but your caravan would need the mounting points built in at the factory...

My son who is a cycling expert has enlightened me to a skill I never knew existed.

The ability of packing a bike for transport.

There are on the market all sorts of bits and pieces to aid breaking a bike down to a smaller pakage amnd bags to put them in.

Just a thought...... I'm no expert!

If you take of the front wheels and turn the handlebars sideways you should be able to fit at least 3 of them in the boot, I can get four adult bikes in my trooper this way

Bikes aren't all that heavy....we used to put 2 adult and 2 kids bikes in the van with no problems. Put the awning and poles in the car and you should be fine.
