Your Windypops,

I notice you state "just because i'm not allowed to overtake." There's nothing to say you can't overtake slower moving vehicles if:

a) You can safely and legally do so

b) You have the performance to do so

I have come across slower moving vehicles than myself before and when able to do so, have overtaken them without causing any incovenience.

Martin.

Perhaps I never made myself clear enough Martin. There are times, especially on Herefordshire roads, where you can travel for tens of miles with no chance of overtaking while towing, that is unless one has a death wish. That is the reason I pull in, because a car has far more chance of overtaking a car travelling at say 40mph than I have. Take my comment in my above post -

quote "It was a total waste of time though because in 2 miles I caught her up with several other vehicles behind an Asda lorry where we all stayed for the next 10 miles until I arrived home".

Not one car overtook that lorry in the 10 miles, simply because of poor roads and the length of the lorry.

I agree with Phil and Malcolm L

Like they say often the car or cars in front driver hanging on to steering wheel for dear life.
I don't know if it's legal but if i'm on a single carriageway road and i come to a roundabout i go completely round it once. I only loose 30 seconds or less. pulling in is a pain though i have done it.

I always pull over when there are more than 4 vehicles behind me and drivers often show their appreciation (seriously). On straight stretches of road where I am travelling at a reasonably fast speed I sometimes slow down and and indicate left to show following traffic that it is clear to overtake.

As already said I get held up by slow solo drivers, more than vice versa, when I am towing

I must admit that this thread went along the same lines as another on the same topic many months ago, showing that most are courteous by letting others pass. It's not hard to understand why caravanners are hated though from a couple of posts in this thread.

Personally, if I had the same intolerant attitude of others has mick k and kenneth has I would wind down the window as a car overtakes, give them the bird *mlm* and shout "why don't you f*** off *$$w*pe".

Nothing quite like getting the first word in :O)

If I see cars behind me build up and believe that they will have a chance to pass the vehicle(s) in front of me or they will be able to go forward at a better pace (e.g. where weather conditions may make me more cautious speed wise then a solo car)then I will pull over if the opportunity presents itself. As there are few situations where my outfit is not matching the general pace of the traffic on single carriageway roads so pulling over will only be felt necessary by me where the nature of the road or vehicle in front of me makes trying to pass it myself inappropriate, but do not bother if it is only enabling a few impatient drivers to move up a position in a stream of vehicles. It is rare for a road to be so devoid of bends that an intelligent driver can not see when there is other traffic causing the slow pace.

If drivers of solo vehicles are held up by towed caravans that are travelling 10mph slower than they want to do I would ask them to lobby the government to remove the speed restrictions that apply to towing vehicles.

If I were to be guilty of causing a hold up then I would (and have) pulled into a suitable lay by to let others pass. I only hope that the Sunday driver in the Morris Minor does not pass me and continue at 35mph.

I have noticed time after time after time when someone passes you they are only just in front of you at the next roudabout or road junction. They just don't like behind a caravan because they can't see where they are going. Ken

Having read the posts here, I must be in the hated camp, lucky and blind because I've never pulled-over, never had a queue a fortnight long at my rear or maybe I need to visit specsavers.I dont buy this malarky about people being held-up all because it was a caravan in front of them, jesus, you would think we were talking about those slow moving show people with their 20mph trucks.Caravan haters will never change their attitude even if you pulled in every 500yds. I dont know what type of roads some of you drive on but if its an A-road and you are doing 50mph then the simpletons at your rear should be aware of speed limits. Finally, the comment about the Asda lorry blows the argument out of the water,or do we want them to pull in every mile or so, also!

went to heathrow on tuesday from south wales on the m4. At one stage i was approaching 2 lorries side by side. Rather than go in lane 3 to overtake i stayed behind the lorry in lane 2. It took 3 1/4 miles for it to overtake and pull in. Its these drivers people should curse not caravanners. I know there are some HGV drivers on here, so please explain why you do this. It baffles me.
the reason it takes so long for a hgv to overtake another hgv

well lets start from the begining.back in the 80s the government of the time(headed by mrs t i belive)decided that too many hgvs were speeding so after many consultations with the "industry"(whoever they are but i can nearly guarentee that most of them dont drive hgvs)it was decided that hgvs were to be fitted with road speed limiters which were set at 60mph which at the time was the hgv speed limit.then when the eu started saying that everything in the eu has to be the same they tried to get the uk to drop the speed down to 50mph(80kph)but the government of the time (the same mrs t)said no we will have our own speed limit and set it at 56mph.now as far as i know the uk is the only country in the eu who has speed limiters fitted to hgvs but i belive that is changing now i think france has started fitting them.so thats the history behind it(well from my point of view anyway)so to answer your question why it takes so long to overtake...its because the set speed is never the same on speed limiters and one hgv might be half to one mph faster than the other and being behind a slower hgv can become frustrating having to hold back all the time so. so that is why it takes so long for hgvs to pass each other. i personaly wait until im on a hill where if im more powerfull i will overtake or use the weight on the downside of the hill to pass.if i get stuck at the side of another hgv while im trying to overtake i will back off until i can overtake which im sorry to say more that a few fellow hgv drivers fail to do

sorry for the rant but i hope this explains the reason why

well here is the reason why asda, sainsburys, tesco, waitrose and many other supermarket chains drive at the speed they do......its because thats what the drivers are told to do.......the speed limit!!!.........i once spoke to an asda driver and he told me there tacographs are checked for speed and they are satalite tracked so the traffic office know if they have been speeding on a roads.by the way the limit on a roads for an hgv is 40mph,duel carridgeway 50mph,motorways 60mph,but as hgvs are fitted with speed limiters they can only do 56mph
