How to get rid of Urine smell?

I have noticed in our washroom that we have a strong urine smell, concerned I hadn't cleaned out the cassette correctly I re cleaned it, I also then went on to clean the whole washroom with no effect to the smell.

after looking around I seem to of traced the smell coming from the area in which the cassette is stored. When you pull out the cassette it reveals a plastic bottom with a drip panel and an area to store some small bottle of blue and pink chemical. Anyway the smell seems to be coming from underneath this plastic bottom but the only way I seem to be able to get access to it is by removing the whole toilet and shower tray.

I have noticed the area in which you store your chemicals has a couple of hole's and i'm guessing some how that some urine has dripped thru. I've kept spraying cleaner into it and it has helped a little but not removed the smell totaly.

I'm not sure how the urine has dripped thru unless one of the kids has used the loo whilst I was away emptying the cassette but i would of noticed splashes of urine in the compartment when i returned the casstte and it is an area that we always wipe clean so again would of noticed. the only other thought is if the rubber seals are maybe a little worn on the cassette and as i've pulled out the cassette for emptying whilst full a little has come out of the cassette and dribbled thru to the underneath of the plastic bottom?????

Any advice or recommendations appreciated.

Thanks.

You could try checking the seals by flusing some rinse water into the bowl with the slider shut. Add a bit more pink to it so you can see it easily. Leave for some minutes and then empty. Now look into the compartment and you should see some pink drips if the seal is leaking. Easy to replace, but make sure you have the model number of the toilet as seals have changed a bit from model to model.

Otherwise, it's the old pub sign "We aim to please; you aim too please !"

Andrew, ive never seen or heard of this problem in a van before but my wife is a care worker and she has said on many occassions that trying to remove this smell is probably the hardest part of her job. she says the only way is to thoroughly scrubb the area and repeatedly clean untill the smell has gone then allow the area to air for quite a few days or even weeks.

Unfortunately it does seem that you are going to have to remove the cassete unit, when you have done so and cleaned the area make sure you seal up the holes so it does not happen again. i think the holes are not meant to be there as i have never had any in any of my vans.

The holes in the bottom are there on all of the toilets. You just havent noticed them. They are for securing to the floor if required when fixing.

Vinegar is about the best thing to neutralise urine smells, the smell from urine is mostly alkaline ammonia which is neutralised by acidic vinegar which in turn evaporates away in a day or two

Hi, when our dog caughta skunk it smelt awful, so we were advised to totally rub him down in tomato juice and let it dry. Then thoroughly hose him down!
