how to? portapotti to proper toilet in caravan??can i do it?

Hi,can anyone help me out please? I'm new to caravaning and have bout a Sprite XL ci musketeer late 1980's model. Its in great condition and we love it but the only problem is the toilet. At the moment there is a porta potti type thing which has a removable drawer in the bottom to empty...well, thats a bit to close for comfort as I'm a bit squeamish!!I like the proper toilets on newer caravans were they're fixed in and you just connect a pipe from the outside of the caravan wall to a waste container.I really really want DIY my carvann to have this kind of toilet but all the ones i've looked at buying need an onboard water tank which mine doesn't have. Can anyone please help me and tell me if this can be done and if so, how???

I'm sorry to have to disappoint you here, but the pipe that connects to the wastemaster outside the van, carries grey water from the kitchen sink etc.

The toilet has its own container housed underneath the pan, this is very similar to the porta-potti, just a more modern version but the emptying process is no different, they are both disposed of at the elsan point.

You could no doubt fit a more modern caravan toilet, but it would cost more than the van is worth,

It's just one of the joys of caravanning I'm afraid. The only alternative is to use the site facilities.As far as I'm aware there is no system to connect your toilet to mains sewers.

But why be sqeamish? We all have to do it!

If the porta potti is kept in a separate wash area as Happy Lappy and Emmerson pointed out there is little difference because cassette toilets which are fixed still have to be emptied, only the access point is different.

If your caravan doesn't have a separate washroom area you could invest in a toilet tent to house your pota potti away from the living area.

Use toilet chemicals available from all caravan accessory shops to keep your porta potti clean and fresh and if the site that you are on has toilet / shower facilities use them because you've paid for them.

The best thing to do is to get somebody else to empty it!

Emptying the loo is not my favourite of tasks and one I dreaded when we took up caravanning, but its not as bad as I expected. We have a porta potti in our 1984 Abbey GT 212 and although I would love to have a 'toilet' looking loo like the modern caravans have, the only difference is the appearance and the fact you can remove the waste tank from the outside of the caravan. Not much benefit for the cost.

Just remember to use the right chemicals and don't leave the tank until its full before you empty it. I try not to leave ours past halfway otherwise its too heavy for me to lift!

One thing I forgot to mention. Do remember to have a few trial goes at filling the thank with water then emptying it home before you venture out to a site. That way you know what to do before you get to site and have a tank full of waste to empty.
