Hymer - Problems on sites

I am considering buying a Hymer 466 Swing, it has excellent reports and is built really well compared to the british built caravans we have seen, however after facing a few problems getting an insurance quote (As it isn't built in the UK), I am a little worried that I will have the same problems finding a site that will let on "Foreign" caravans,

Is this a big problem, or am I just worring over nothing?

The Hymer isn't a caravan associated with use by the travelling fraternity, so you should have no problems getting onto site with it. Can't comment on the insurance but wouldn't have thought it would be a problem, since sales and spares backup are probably just as good as a UK manufacturer, which is to say awful!

Hi Andrew

We own a Dethleffs which is a German van. The Hymer is a cracking piece of kit and no need to worry you will not be stopped from using UK sites because its a Hymer. We use Caravan Guard for our insurance as they specialise in German vans. Hope this helps. Enjoy your Hymer

I believe the reason some continental 'vans are refused entry to some sites is because they don't have 12volt systems and so demand more from a hook up. Also some don't have toilet compartments or even running water. Since the Hymer has all this it shouldn't be a problem.

Hi I have never heard of any problems with the Hymer Are you in the caravan club?? If so as a member you would gain acces to all their sites.

As far as insurance goes surely the Caravan club insure Hymers.

We made friends with a German couple on a caravan club site ,they were in a Hymer .

I've had a Hymer for 5 years.It's a fantastic van and I've never had a single problem with entry to sites.

Neither have I had problems getting it insured. Try NFU.

We have a Hobby caravan and have it insured with NFU,no problems.

Usually the gripe insurers have with Hobby 'vans is the larger models are 2.5mtrs wide, and there are certain legal implications when towing these. The Hymer doesn't suffer from this, being less than 2.3mtrs.

Hi Andrew, we pick up our new Hymer in 2 weeks, you wont have any problems taking it on sites, or with insurance, we are insured with the caravan club, you could also try Crusader insurance (who are based at Lowdham Hymer dealers) in Nottingham.

We have used our Hymer now for 4 years equating to about 80 site visits and never had any problems about access. Nor virually any issues about it having the door and hence awning on the wrong side, just once at CC Haycraft were we asked to pitch hitch in.With most of the current line-up they now have the door on the UK side.

With insurance we were initialy asked to comfirm it was not a privately imported van; from which we sense the CC was not keen on German spec versions.

We have a Dethleffs 470DL (made by the Hymer group) and it is insured by the CC, although I could not get insurance on-line, I had to phone up, because of the width, mainly, I think. Only been away for one weekend up to now - it's acracking van!

My Hymer is now 5 years old, just gone through its service with only a window blind needing tensioning. Superb piece of kit, Caravan Club insurance was cheaper than Crusader this year. Never had a problem getting access on any UK sites, only problem is keeping admirers away. We own the Hymer Nova 530DB

I can't understand all this fuss about imported caravans and insurance. Most cars in this country are imported from the continent, i.e. Mercesdes, BMW, Toyota, VW to name a few. As Britain is part of the EU how can a Hymer or similar be a foreign caravanunless it was imported from Russia?

Is it possible that site owners are reluctant to take foreign vans due to the fact that the door is on the 'wrong' side? It should be OK if they sited you with the 'A' frame nose in. That way all the awnings will be on the so-called correct side of the van.

Most sites aren't too fussy about what side your door's on, as I say it's mostly due to the fact some foreign 'vans have no 12v electrics and no running water. Some of the larger 'vans will be refused because most pitches are set up for a shipping length of not more than 24ft, and there is, whether rightly or wrongly, the association with travellers. As far as insurance goes; a foreign 'van is apparently 5 to 12 times more likely to be stolen than a British 'van, and lots are not NCC approved.

I too have a Nova 530TB now coming up to the six year mark. I haven't experienced any site problems. Rally organisers get into a bit of a tissy with the door on the wrong side. We use our van a lot, just came back from wintering in Spain, I have no problems at all. with my British ones I had a multitude with water egress being the main offender. I will be interested to see if this years spec's will tempt me to change.
