Hymer

I am interested in buying a used Hymer. It is the Nova 530LE, has anyone got any opinions on Hymers in general and particularly the Nova 530LE. I know they are quite a heavy van but know little else about the brand. Youre views would be most welcome.

Thanks

I am probably (certainly!) biased as I own a 2006 Hymer Nove 465, bought 18 months ago as a first caravan, although we have had folding campers before.

When we started to look at caravans we were appalled at the quality of British caravans, and almost gave up at that point. We then saw some Geist and Hymers and were converted. I think that most people would agree that Hymer are in the top 2 or 3 of makes for quality, even if they are "anti-german".

On the down side there are several issues:

1 they are heavy - but we tow ours very happily behind a Nissan X trail (old model diesel), 6000+ miles so far.

2 they are pricey, we got a private sale bargain, but you get what you pay for.

3 Some people would say that the spec is poor, although a UK spec Hymer has a very good electric system with a sophisticated battery and charger including solar panel control, and has a small oven. There is no microwave or built in telly, but I have never used a microwave and would never take a telly away, so no problem.

On the plus side, the long A frame means superb towing, and space for a bike rack across the front, while the great insulation means that cold nights are no problem.

In short, as long as the layout suits your intended use you will not find a better van.

(stands back and waits for the backlash!!!)

Thanks Dave I agree about the quality of build everything on the Hymer seems solid and well made so I think I may go ahead and purchase.

I am very biased towards Hymer. I have had a Oddysey, Avondale and 2 Hymer caravans. I have never had any problems with the Hymers or indeed the (old) Avondale. They are heavier. But they are the most robust caravan out there. Nothing has fallen off/broken/weakened and I have had 2 kids in there for our annual holidays and many weekends in the year. The door issue/microwave/telly is secondary. Hymer do not have to sell their product on gimicks. The structure/strength and quality is what you are buying - a tv is

Hi Nick,

Just to throw a spanner in the works- I have a 2006 Hymer Nova 570 GS (owned from new) To date we have had all 3 taps, a bathroom shelf and 2 tyres replaced. 1 tap, shelf and tyres were replaced under warranty and to be fair these were items commonly found on probably 95% of manufactured vans.

The most alarming problem was, that after the van was around 15 months old 2 small creases appeared above the door aperture. When I took it to the dealer he said that he would speak to Hymer about it.The conclusion was that I had either gone over a pot hole or a speed ramp at a tremendous speed(as you do of course!!) and consequently the van had in theory broken it's back.

To cut a long story short the dealer and Hymer do not want to know about it. However the problem has not put us off the Hymer and we still rate it very highly as regards- General build quality and tow ability. I would not swop it for a UK van.

I have also owned 2 Avondales and although as good as any other UK van they did have quite a number of issues.

I owned a Hymer Nova 470 for 6 years and in that time lived in it for the equivelant of 2 years ie 4 months a year. It was towed almost 40K miles. We had some failures like the others reported, sink taps failed twice, tyres that I have since learned were a faulty batch, 1 pump and 1 gas strut on the bed box. We traded it in last year for a Fendt to obtain a layout we wanted but although the Fendt is certainly OK (very much so compared with UK quality)it is cheaper than Hymer and it shows. The reservation we had was with the dealership, whom we found arrogant and very lucky to be dealing with a quality product that made life so easy for them. Neither do we like the unecessary changes made to more recent UK spec vans by them. We liked the clean utilitarian german lines of ours and didnt want fancy furnishings, door on the UK side etc

Having said all that they dont come much better.

Hi Helen,

I have been in contact with the guy in Australia for a number of months now and I will e-mail you with the outcome of his dilemma! Please bear with me for a couple of days as I will have to dig his e-mails out and I am a bit short on time.

Allthough I must admit Hymer makes very good caravans indeed; the comparison with Fendt is not correctly. Last month a big survey in Germany under thousands of caravanners revealed the following result on the topic of quality:

1. Fendt

2. Tabbert

3. Knaus

Overall winner (incl. comfort, service, dealership, design, driving) is Fendt, with Tabbert en Hymer following.

In many tests in Germany/Holland Hymer/Eriba caravans score very high; but Fendt scores even higher: quality is more stable and more thought has been put into the design of the vans. Eriba's quality feel is sometimes hampered by loose-laying cables, 'fussy' interior styling and minor problems with fitting equipment. Just to put things a bit in perspective....
