I'm looking at the Santa Fe and the Sorrento. If you don't mind me asing, why did you swap for the Sorrento. I'm 50/50 on them to buy, although my short wife seems limited with the view out of the sorento, the seats do not seem to rise much. (or at least the dealer could'nt work out how).

Hi Chris,

The Santa Fe was a previous shape version, I had an 04 and an 06 version of it. The Sorento is an 08 and I swapped it because the dealer was offering a ridiculous deal for a new Sorento, and a good trade-in for the Santa Fe. I think that the new Santa Fe is a bit pricey compared to the old model - the price now brings it into line with a lot of other SUV-type 4x4's, though it is a nice car. The Sorento is heavier, powerful and felt better on the test drive - it was really price to change that won the day though. We are well happy with it so far (since March).

Are you looking at new shape Sanata Fe or old?

Neal. can you tell me if it was the 2 litre diesel Santa Fe you had. I just bought my first caravan ( bailey pageant champagne series 5) at the end of August & found my 1.8 petrol Vectra struggled to pull it on a slope. I bought a 55 plate 2 litre diesel Santa Fe & went almost the same route with no problems. I haven't yet tried it on a steep hill & would be interested on how you found it.

I was comparing 1 or 2 year old cars. The Santa Fe's 5 year waranty being a big plus. You are correct in stating they have crept up in price though.

Tom,

Both Santa Fe's were 2-litre diesels, both the 115bhp version. We never had any dificulties on hills, either when moving or starting off. The only time it ever slowed up was on the A30 and A38 in Devon / Cornwall on some of the steep hills after the M5 / heading to Bodmin but this was only a change down to third (with a fully loaded car and 'van).

On one occasion I had to do a reasonably long reverse uphill onto a pitch and the clutch was a bit warm and smelly after, though you would probably expect this from all except the biggest 4x4s, never had any clutch problems at all though.

Alround, two great cars / value for money / equipment and all.

I'm sure yours will cause you no problems - especially with the warranty being as long as it is.

Cheers,

Neal

Neal. Thanks for the quick reply. I like the car very much & thought it was a lot of car for the money.I shall look forward to getting away in the van next year now that I know it's ok on the hills.

Tom.

i have a 57 plate santa fe cdx 7 auto. my inlaws have an 02 plate santa fe they are also caravanners. we bought the santa fe because how great theres was, how it towed and how good it was on fuel compared to alot of other 4 x 4's. i love the car, great on fuel and the tiptronic auto box is fantastic. we did go and test drive the new sorento the engine is more noisey than the santa fe. they are very simular. yes the sorrie does tow more but our santa fe has self levelling suspension and is better on fuel. theres for and against for the sorrie and the santa fe its down to personnel choice and money.

the only thing i would change my santa fe for is an X5, XC90 or a porche caynne ( if spelt correct ) then i would need really big pockets to run it.

the santa fe on the motorway with out towing you can get into the 40's mpg.

good luck let us know what you deceide.

thanks

Hi Adrian,

I've brought a 2.0L TD Santa Fe '54' reg only a couple of months ago. I bought because we had just purchased a newer van and needed something that could tower the heavier van.

It was the first 4x4 I'd owned and so was a little nervous when buying it. I needn't have worried as it is a fantastic car - good at towing and really practical. I get 32mpg combined and it only goes down to 29mpg when towing on the motorway. We recently went to Devon from our home in Staffordshire and it was really smooth on the motorway, good up hills and very practical across a muddy campsite !!

The interior is of good standard i.e. leather seats (comfy), seat heaters, all electric windows, a good heater plus a useful 12v socket in the boot which we plug in our electric coolbox whilst travelling. It is also a very spacious car inside.

In my opinion they are a great bargain as they are usually alot cheaper to buy than other 4x4's and cheaper to run. They also get a good review on the Top Gear website.

Good luck in your decision !

Hi

Have a look at the Kia range as well, they are owned by Hyundai, slighly different specs etc but basically the same base engineering. Kia prices tend to be aimed slighly lower as the basic specs are lower.

i bought an adult seat booster for my wife. it makes all the difference for her.we love the sorento. ours is automatic and hasn't put a step out of place since new two years ago. i should like the 168hp engine though. however when towing the 138hp engine has easily taken us up and down pretty steep hills in Scotland and over very muddy fields.
