I need a new tow car and a local garage has a 2005 Hyundai Terracan for £6k.It is diesel with switchable 4wd
Auto car and Honest John web sites seem to say that it is a good but dated car and tows well. It has a kerb weight of about 2100kg.
I have a T/A with a MTPLM of 1598kg so it is well within my towing limits.
Has any one driven one and can comment on it ?

Mike, as far as I know the Terracan is a mk 1 Shogun with a smart suit on! Nothing wrong with that, its a proven drive train. My mate has a 07 model, and he's thrilled with it. Had it three years now, and nothing has gone wrong.Go for it.
The biggest snag for me is that it hasn't got Land Rover badges on!

The Hyundai Terracan is based on the 2nd generation Pajero (Shogun mk2) - the engine origin is unclear as the Mitsubishi diesels were 2.8, not the 2.9 in the Hyundai - it may be a VM Motori as Hyundai built many of those under licence before developing their own.
The Aussies still rate Terracans for off-roading in the outback - unlike a Land Rover which they won't touch with a proverbial bargepole.

Thanks everyone. We did look at a shogun but the Terracan has a much larger boot to put the dog cages in
I think the engine may be the same as in my 2.9 Kia Sedona

Just put a deposit on the car and hope to collect it next Friday
I got about £100 less for my Sedona than I wanted but negotiated a new cam belt for the Terracan. As far as I can see it should have been changed at 60,000 miles, and may have been, but there is no proof it was. The car has done 75,000 miles and all servicing from new is there..
As the cam belt on the Sedona cost me about £600 when I had it done and I assume that the Terracan is the same cost I am happy

Paulbob, the handbook says not to use 4WD on dry tarmac but it also says for vehicle towing use 4wd.
I am not sure if by vehicle towing they mean towing another car or towing a caravan. When you were towing did you use 4wd or 2wd.
I have used the internet to find the answer with no success

Hi Mike, I have had 2 Nissan Terranos with selectable 4 wheel drive, which are similar. I have always towed in 2 wheel drive, with no problems at all.

I'd question that advice if its Mitsubishi running gear, since Mitsubishi always advised towing in 4wd. Something to do with the diffs if I remember rightly.

Mcghee, thanks for the reply. I have checked and the hand book says not to use 4wd when towing or driving solo on dry tarmac and this has been confirmed on the Hyundai web site
