I don`t get it

Being a contributor on this and various other similar sites on a range of subjects, there is one aspect of some forums (although its fortunately a rare occurence on this site) that I don`t understand. It`s the "telling everbody what I`ve got" bit at the end.

I can`t see how telling everyone you`ve a 2009 triple-turbochaged Range Rover Sport with a 55 foot Airstream double-decker caravan contributes anything to the debate.

Are we supposed to be in awe, does it mean we should mock the guy in a Trabant with a trailer tent instead?

No doubt someone will link size to sexual inadequacies but I`m not going there......

What`s it all about?????

On one car forum (which I find very useful for technical info) we have people saying what they run, its colour, trim colour etc down to the extras they have fitted, `chrome grill, Parrot hand-free kit, bag hook in boot` (??????).

Fair enough if a thread is related to a specific item which is relevent (questions on a particular car or caravan for instance) where knowledge and personal experience of that item is helpful, otherwise it just comes across as being crass.

To me a caravanner is a caravanner, doesn`t matter what they drag or what they drag it with, the person is more important than the equipment, and as such I don`t need to know or care what someone has.

I doesn`t make their point of view any more valid because they have an expensive outfit and feel the need to publicise it.

I agree.

Chrisbee (Green 2001 Citroen C5 2.2 HDI estate loaded with Mrs Chrisbee and Border collie towing 2008 Bailey Pageant Burgundy.)

Oh, it's the car towing the van, not the dog. What would my English teacher have said?

Hi Angus

Calm down! Calm down!

I don't see the signature thing as people bragging ect, I do sometimes look at their signatures to see what outfit they have. I too am a member on other caravan forums but don't put my outfit details on it because I've never thought about doing so I guess.

I can't quite see what this is about, I have no idea what most people tow with here.

But there are big differences between caravan sizes and types of car towing them. An understanding of what is being towed and what is towing it can be a starting guide to those offering advice.

Trying to compare Lisa's Petrol GL to my diesel GL could be misleading if fuel type was not mentioned. Lisa's Petrol Gl has quicker acceleration and a bigger engine but my diesel has an extra 125lb/ft or pulling power from a lower rpm with a higher top speed. Most people find that better for towing.

I guess that Lisa is a bit younger and sportier than me and wants to zip around town and keep her hands sweeter smelling.

???? Sadie is a girls name! My husband seems to think I'm female! My son and daughter call me Mum or Mama Dearest when they want to bug me! My parents only had two daughters. My nieces call me auntie Sadie. I've never been kicked out of the ladies changing rooms at M&S. Jimmy Choo's are my fav power shoes.

Chrisbee

I have my regular appointment with my Gynaecologist next week. I went to an all girls school with his sister so I'll ask him.

But until then, when I was first pregnant thirty years ago I'm sure they had me down as female and again when I had my daughter and nothings changed much.

Chrisbee,

I apologise if you are not heading where I think you are heading, and although I have never met Sadie in the flesh, you can't knock her for having bigger b**ls than most of the men on this forum.

Sadie,

I know the last thing you probably need is a mere man defending your corner, but there it is, done !

I'll suffer later no doubt ;-)

My mother was only brought up to be a housewife and was. I took over my late fathers business as a very young woman as my mum hadn't a clue. My husband has worked all over the world. If it needed doing I did it or got it done, and when my husband was away working I either towed the caravan and met up with him at times or sat at home with the kids.

No, I'm just on a wind up, I know Sadie is a woman and admire her for standing up and being counted as one in what is MAINLY a hobby where the men do the driving and technical bits.

I could not agree with you more Angus . Unless its relevant to the question/senario then I can't see its anything more than general chit chat or maybe a mild form of one-upmanship . I personally think of us as campers (caravan/motorhome/folding camper/tent ) who go onto sites in the middle of fields and have a thoroughly brilliant , marvellous , restful , relaxing , friendly , chatty , informative time with all the others on site doing exactly the same ! . Then we proceed homewards feeling happy and content towing our unit behind , not bothering to look for the lastest caravan or gismo or whatever , not looking for XL5 / TDCPI / RS66 /WHATEVER on the rear of a towing vehile , but just ready to help/assist or just nod and wave to anyone like ourselves , enjoying the freedom of camping .AAaarrrrrrr just thinking about being in the caravan makes me happy ,so please all enjoy , the happier each individual is then the happier the total site is . As I nod and wave to you all , happy camping . --- Steve .

I do agree with the point Angus is trying to make.

I've often thought the same but just let it go over my head because I wouldn't dream of making a controversial post. :O)

LB and Brian

I've been thinking (my brain hurts), I don't recall any recent postings from Ria and James. Have they gone to France?

I think they did Lisa , and so have many others . Same antagonistic posts, same tall stories and the same ending.

Same person ,what do you think.

I wonder what they will be called next time?

French Connection springs to mind.

It's strange though, even though I do the towing and know about caravan maintenance, tyre pressures and all that stuff, I don't write like a man though do I?

Well, i don't think I do.

I don't know about James or Ria, although I remember them, and don't forget cris either. Jason, as far as I know wasn't either of them. He is male and his name is part of his email address. At one time he couldn't send me an email on a topic he thought I would be interested because at the time he was abroad and didn't have my addy so he got his daughter back in the UK to send it to me. I believe he's in Oz at the moment and will probably be staying there eventually.

Lisa, although you do talk about the topics you mentioned you are and come over as female although in some of your pics you do have a 5 O'Clock shadow ..... heh! heh!

Now goes and hides in the corner.
