A couple of questions come to mind, and as an ex motorhome owner I feel slightly informed.

You are obviously thionking of buying a mtotorhome and that is fine, but are you exisitng caravan owners looking to change, or just entering the hobby as 'newbies'?

Why the Lunar model in particular? It would appear that you have looked around and this layout suits what you wish.

The reasons for the questions are that moving to a motorhome form a caravan does involve a different approach, and some like it, others don't. Also the particular model may be just the 1st one you have seen that suits and I would suggest have a long hard look at everything you can get to see, as there are motorhomes for every taste out there, and the purchase is a significant issue that you want to get right first time.

I'm the editor of Practical Caravan's sister magazine, Practical Motorhome. One of the good people on the PCV team alerted me to your cry for help!

We don't currently have an online forum, but feel free to email me direct with any motorhome questions or concerns.

My email address is rob.ganley@haymarket.com

Hi Scotch Lad, in answer to your cooments. We owned m/h from 1996 , 1 coach built Hymer and 2 A class Hymers, then 1 large Bessacar and finally Bessacar 435.We were in Germany at the time of Rhine on Fire, weather hot,had trouble getting parked and wife getting uptight as she cannot stand high tempetures.Result after coming home she did not want to use m/c as car can get in most places so back to a caravan which we had started in 1964.In the caravan this time travelled western Europe and uk, every thig fine until she said missed the travelling bit ie just go, no booking sites etc which i find you have to do with a caravan, plus i only changed back to caravan for her sake as i am died in the wool m/h person. We no longer have the income which we had in the 90' and it came up when in a dealers that this m/h if we changed might suit us providing it met our preferances (she has said that the colour inside is not what she would have chose but anything to get back the feeling we had with m/h. Of course i have pointed out the same problems of access still apply.

Robert,

Like you I am more inclined to the motorhome scene, but have to be careful about mentioning that around here. We swopped back to a caravan as we moved house to an apartment and I could not keep the motorhome in the parking area. So we bought a caravan and keep it in storage. Of course we can use the same car as both tugger and day to day use, but I do hanker back to the m/h. I had a Compass Mercedes coachbuilt from the 1980's and loved the payload at 700 kg plus. We could throw whatever we liked inside and still have allowance for a few crates of good wine to bring home. In addition, our kids were young and loved sleeping in the huge luton while we drove in the evening. It made long journeys a lot easier. The other thing that tempts me back is that you can get airconditioning in a m/h, although you do need a goood electrical supply or genny. I agree when it is very hot, that having that can be bliss at night.

Yes, the big issue is the lack of day to day transport when on site. It is more of an issue here in the UK as sites are often out of town rather than in France where aires are usually in towns or close by. Of course some of the new smaller van types on the new Sevel chassis are a shade under 6 meters long, but still nippy enough for daily use, especially if retired.

You have mentioned your better half has doubts about the interior colour and from that perspective I would be cautious, as she will always make adverse comments. Maybe better to wait and look around as the market is such that you will probably get a good deal whatever m/h you look at.

Hire before you Buy. We did think of changing from caravan to motorhome. But after hiring a few we found a few problems for us.

1. It would in our case be the only transport and as Worthing now has parking restrictions on motorhomes even small ones it would be a problem.

2. We found after hiring a few the cheap end of the market say 25k very basic once you got to 50k thing got better. But 50k plus well to us was just to much money.

At the end of the day HIRE BEFORE YOU BUY.

Hell Stephan, we live just along the coast from you and use to visit your area in winter just for a afternoon out, often stopped up where the fishing boats are/were.
