I have been a caravaner/motorhomer for the last 30 years plus. For the first 20 years I had a caravan. For the next 10 years a motorhome. Last year I went back to a caravan and took out insurance with CC told them my situation and they gave me 3 years no claims discount even though I had not towed for 10 years. They told me that my previous experience with a caravan/motorhome was the reason they would did this plus the fact that I have had no accidents.

My insurance renewal is due soon and the renewal documents have arrived showing 4 years no claim discount. I have of coursed shopped around. The problem that I have do I tell the insurance companies that my no claims discount is 1 or 4 years. For instance one well known company give me a quote of £225.00 for one years discount but £197.00 for 4 years discount! Not a lot of money but every little helps. CC want over £280.00.

Any comments please would be appreciated.

Of the top of my head, I suggest you tell the new insurer the same as you told the CC, and let them decide. They cannot then turn round and claim you misled them.

Thanks for the advice. CC insurance now down to £277.00 new for old, van 3 years old, CC will cover vans up to 5 years old to include motor mover at £750.00 and roll up awning at £200.00. The other company Safeguard gave the the premiums above online the lower amount on 4 years no claims discount and the higher amount based on 1 years no claims both on new for old. As suggested gave Safeguard a ring gave them the facts. They accepted 4 years no claims discount however they then said I would have to add the motor mover and awning, I thought I had done this online but they said no. The figure they then came up with was £260.00! They would not budge from that amount although they did say if I added a tracker and a BWP through the well clamp they could give a better discount which ended up at £268.00! The van already has an alarm, corner steady tilt alarm, a milenco wheel lock, a post at the back and front of the van, a robstop and the two corner steady locks, the van is on the front drive. The cost of a tracker is not worth the discount??!!.

I think I will stay with CC as not happy with the way Safeguard dealt with me on top of this many years ago I lost a wheel off a caravan and it was a right off. I was insured with CC at the time and they were very good as they arranged via the dealer i bought the van from for a loan van for my next holiday two weeks away and when I came back from my holiday a new van was waiting for me.

unless someone thinks Safeguad is better than CC that's the way I will go.

Hello Bid,

Congratulations!

It good to read of someone who is genuinely taking the time to check out the details of their insurance policies, and then taking a considered view of the options they've been given.

What value can you put on the peace of mind of having a policy and broker you can trust.

Least cost is not always best value, as I think you have come to understand on this occasion.

We now use the CC or Towergate as we had issues with the other named company and would never use them again even if their quote was the lowest. We got caught the same way where a lower quote suddenly increased.

The service we have had from CC insurance would mean we would not leave for a few pounds saving. Cannot comment on the other insurer so I would not take the risk of joining them
