Hi All

Here's my technical question. We have an ordinary old a frame and use an old ordinary hitch and stabilizer.

Can we but one of the new hitches that I see on caravans?

If so do we need to change the tow bar on the car?

Hi,

Check the pattern of bolt holes to confirm it will fit - most modern hitches have two bolts through the side of the coupling, but some have one side bolt and one vertical bolt.

If your caravan chassis was made by AL-KO (check the manufacturers plate) and it currently has an AL-KO tow-hitch, then it should be a straightforward job to replace with an AL-KO stabiliser coupling.

If you have a flange-plate tow-ball, then you'll need to buy the AL-KO extended neck ball for use with a stabiliser coupling, but if you have a swan-neck or detachable tow-bar - then these are always OK.

Maybe a stupid question, but why do you wish to change the hitch? If it is to get a stabiliser then fit a free standing one. They work just as well as the inbuilt variety.

Sorry, se you already havea stabilser so cannot see what you are trying to achieve, except spend money.

I have a neck problem and it is getting very difficult to lift the stailizer over. I'm thinking the new ones would make it easier for me to do.

I think the old blade stabilisers works better than the modern hitch type, but I'll forgo the advantages for the convenience when it's chucking it down with rain!! to say nothing of grease or should that be no grease?

Alko generally have three hole in the hitch to fit both styles of draw bar, but you must make sure your draw bar cannot rotate through 360degs, stabiliser hitches don't work well and are not recommended unless the draw bar has only a limited rotation.
