?..what happens to brake and tyre dust that all vehicles produce, even electric ones, that must be breathed in by pedestrians and cyclists along with other pollutants, an din 6 years time they will change their minds again and decide something else is causing the end of the world

Hi,
Most of the modern electric and hybrid vehicles implement regenerative braking, which reduces the amount the conventional brakes are used. This has the effect of reducing brake dust generation and it also makes the brakes Lat a lot longer.

As I understand it modern diesels are relatively clean when running at higher temperatures and a constant rate. They're not good when used in urban areas as they don't fully get up to temperature to burn nasties off and emit high levels of Nitrogen dioxide and soot although levels of CO[sub]2[/sub] are relatively low compared to petrol. Private cars contribute about 11% of diesel pollution in cities - so really its taxis, buses, vans and trucks that need addressing first.

The government have recently stated they won't punish diesel car owners - but we all know about government promises don't we.

I suppose the future is electric!

I saw an article yesterday that if 6 electric cars all charge at the same time in the same residential street then that street is likely to have a blackout. :( Also, the power taken to charge one car is equivalent to an average household's use for 3 days.
Somewhere has to generate all the electricity required.

WC,

Never mind about six cars being charged at the same time what about if we all put the kettle on at the same time, the countries power stations would not cope :) ,

The Article is flawed... it merely repeats what could be considered fake news,or atleast one sided aimed at diesels and not even caring to make any mention of the what is now becoming numerous reports of petrol engines chucking out up to 10 times more Nox then claimed.... Yes diesels are dirtier than petrol but they can be cleaned up hgv's for a start have lower NOX levels than many diesel cars and remember they use 4 or 5 times the mount are diesel a car does ,so somehow logic says should pollute 5 times more but doesn't so the technology is there..Besides there is also the false ideology to ban a certain fossil fuel which doesn't make sense to me we need to use what we have but obviously use technology to make it cleaner. electric or hybrid are great ideas and no doubt one day electric will be the main source but we shouldn't try to do it overnight otherwise no doubt new nightmares might come alive and 50 years down the line with hindsight expert will be saying what a stupid idea that was..

Hello Jonny,

Just for clarity which article do you consider to be flawed?

The original Which? report made the point that engines from different manufacturers produce different amounts of NOx And the mpg of the vehicle does not bear a a relationship to the levels of pollution produced. This seems to agree with your position.

Yesterday was an historic free coal day which means no coal was burnt in any power stations, so what about an historic free diesel day, and all the tree huggers can go and dance round their maypoles, ;)

...........already been sorted.

The Dinorwig and Ffestiniog power stations in Snowdonia can react in a few seconds to power surges caused by such things.
Operators monitor TV programme times to predict mass demand for cups of tea when they end!

hi prof its with regards to the article at the beginning of this thread... on so many levels it is mis informed and biased .firstly it gives the impression that only diesel vehicles are being targeted by the new to be introduced charge by suggesting that even though euro 6 diesels are not meeting the lower Nox levels they will be exempt, its giving the presumption its a diesel tax which it is not..even funnier they then mention the eco boast range of Ford petrol engines as a comparison to diesels use! unwise and very uninformed as the smaller 1.0 litre eco boast petrol engine has already come into criticism, as it was found to produce 15 times the Nox levels it is claimed to produce ...and this being one of the most advanced petrol engines with regards cleanness.... I am not defending diesels but by shining the lime light solely on diesels and not looking as closely at the other fuels namely Petrol as they are at diesels they are leading the general public yet again on a merry dance ...
