Damian, thank's for your concern. But your view is so narrow you only seem to see you bill and not that we are dealing with big business.

In water bills you pay for the water companies paper clips, the MD's cigars and car and any money making attempt etc that they come up with even if they fail, and you and others all pay.

"waste! as in the water the companies waste through their own leaks and inefficiency is paid for by you.

It's quite simple, Water companies are profit driven, You PAY.

Government semm to have put little to no protection in Place to protect the consumer in the long term.

Foreign companies did not buy into UK water as they were feeling charitable or because the companies were mega efficient, they saw a PROFIT opportunity!

cris, we are never going to agree, that is obvious, but, unlike some, I have no problem paying for services which I receive, and I thought it quite obvious too, that companies do not set up to supply services, whatever the service, be it gas, water, electrical goods, or anything else, UNLESS they are going to make a profit.

In ALL companies, we pay the directors salary, and buy the paper clips, and everything else, including R&D.

I DO , however, have a problem being ripped off, and have changed suppliers of utilities to get the very best prices available, which is what everyone should do.

I dont just "put up and shut up", I vote with my feet and money to the better priced provider.

Its no use keep blaming the Government for not putting safety nets in place, they are as bad, no, worse, than the companies, and you get very little in return from them, apart from lies about wars, U turns on previous promises, but someone voted them back in power, NOT me, btw.

There is an old saying that states: 'if you cannot beat them, then join them'.

In 2003 instead of putting 3 grand into an ISA I put it into SVT shares. The shares have increased by 70% in the 3 years since then so I have effectively 'paid' for my water for the next 10 years through the profit. In addition SVT have paid me 5% each year in interest.

So, although like everyone else I complain about the bills, I also have felt that in a small way I have 'scored' a few points, which makes me feel a bit better. Of course, if there were no private companies I wouldn't have been able to do this. Ironically, my own domestic water is still non-privatised so I am using another water supplier to achieve this return.

Just a thought.

cris I think I'm missing a point here, aren't ALL businesses driven by profit? I assume you work for a profit like anyone else so in that case I don't understand your reasoning. If I followed your theory I wouldn't last long from starvation because of the fear of making Lord Sainsbury even richer.
