Hi Folks

After sampling the delights of Benodet in Brittany for many years plus forays in Northern Spain, Switzerland and Austria we are now considering Ital for the first time..

We have a twin axle van and have to go in late July/August as we are both teachers. We have up to 5 weeks away in the summer. Our 4x4 is up to coping with towing in all terrains so far encountered. We prefer campsites that are NOT too large or commercialised and with some shade and privacy. We like sea lake/views and, if poss, somewhere to play with our inflatable dinghy (outboard motor).

We would be VERY grateful for any site suggestions and other advice from any Italy lovers on this site. We would probably think in terms of a 2/3 sites with some touring around.

What are the best areas for a quiter holiday in Italy whilst still being able to visit some interesting historical/scenic places?

Is it a problem to find pitches large enough for our van (7.36 metres). No motor mover so we have to reverse into pitches.

I know this is a bit vague but all helpful suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks in advance

Tim

I enjoyed Tuscany three years ago - lots to do but if you can remember 2003 it was mega hot.

I stopped at Camping Barco Reale - its central to Florence and Pisa.

In my experience pitch sizes on the three camps I stopped on were quite small, but the above campsite had larger than average ones.

Hi Tim

Glad to gere you are to venture to Italy........We love it.

Our present 'van is a twin 8m long. You do have to take care. Many of the smaller sites can be tight. We may be lucky, but we always seem to find a group of people to give us a push if needed. The offer of a cold beer or glass of wine works wonders. We have children and tend to go for larger sites, but I can make a few suggestions.

1. Campinf Orchidea near Baveno on LAke Maggiore great for a few days, right on the lake, nice meals and wonderful views.

Hi Tim.

Sorry about that....must have pressed the wrong key.

2. Camping Modena, suitable for short stay or overnight, with small pool and toilets ok, but has a brilliant restaurant and good value. We have used it on the way up or down.

3. Camping Fornella on Lake Garda. It has a new pitching area with large places, very good for twin axles. Excellent family site and not too busy for a large site.

4. Norcceni Girasole, south of Florence. It is a large site with a mix of pitches. Some very easy and large others small. It may be too commercialised for you but it is very good for Florence as the site runs a daily bus intio the city. Again food on site brilliant.

Hope this is of use

Happy travels BarryB
