I have a vauxhall zafira 2.0 tdi with which I tow an avondale dart (1350kg laden). It tows it ok but - as was pointed out here some time ago, is somewhat underpowered and gives about 23mpg when towing 45 mpg normally.

I am thinking of changing it to a Jaguar Xtype. The zafira has some 100k miles on it and has served me well but maybe time for a change before venturing into Europe this year.

Can't make up my mind whether to get saloon or estate (the 2.0 diesel) The boot on the saloon seems big enough and I wouldn't need the estate normally just for the two of us. I could always put rails and a box on when towing. The saloon is better looking. Is there any difference in the weight or economy?

Your collective opinion would be appreciated.

TIA

Hello Graham,

I assume your current Zafira is the MK1 model 2.0Tdi. It may be a bit late now but if it is the Mk1 then you maximum permitted towing limit is only 1050Kg! You are illegal and your insurance cover whilst towing will be void.

I strongly suggest that you check the limits for your particular vehicle with vehicles Data Plate, relevant handbook, or with the Vauxhall dealer.

Yes thanks John I knew that. Had lots of advice when we decided to get the van and looked into why the tow limit was that low etc etc. However the kerb weight is some 1650 Kg and max train weight is over 3000 Kg. The reason for the limit of 1050 is (apparently) because of an overheat prob with early 2.0Dti so, to reduce warranty claims the max towing limit was reduced. Not worried as I am well below max train weight.

Interestingly the kerb weight of the X type is not that much more than the Zafira but, of course, the power is much higher at 130 Bhp. I'd be interested to see what the Mpg is for the Jaguar.

On paper the saloon is slighly more economical & has slighly less emmisions, presumably due to better aerodynamics. I tow with a 2.2d estate & its a really good tug. I get 25-30mpg while towing a 1250kg swift. Normally get mid 40's solo on a run.

I think the towing limit is 1500kg & the noseweight limit 75kg.

There are some very basic 2.0d S models out there (aimed at fleet buyers). If you want one with plenty of gadgets, go for either an SE or Sport Premium.

The diesel engines are ford TDCI units, tweeked by Jag for better refinement.

Thanks Glen,

went and had a look at the saloon and the boot is huge. Could always put rails and topbox on it. Looked at one but it was 2.5 V6 so no good. The estate is some 60Kg heavier than the saloon but am well within the limits for the saloon anyway. Just thought the saloon would be plenty big enough for us two and the odd times when the grown up children come to join us, its prettier too imo. I like the thought that the engine is a ford and that road tax is only

The 2.0d makes do with a 5 speed box. The 2.2d is 6 speed. I used to tow with a 2.5v6 which is AWD & it was equally as good but the mpg & road tax price made me sell it.

Hi Glenn,I am thinking of changing my E Class Merc for a X type 2litre diesel jag,I have been told of electrical problems with the jag once a tow bar & electics are fitted, have you come across this problem?
