I have a 2005 Grand cherokee with the V6 3.0CRD diesel. It is awsome as a tow car and solo. Fuel consumption solo on a run 30ish and towing 20 - 22mpg, have also had a Cherokee 2.8 auto diesel back in 2007 for a month, disnt tow with it but solo it was a nippy machine with no shortage of power. Solo driving was very similair to the Grand Cherokee. Dont know what your budget is but if it can stretch I would have a look at the Grand cherokee V6 CRD, the power and smooth box is awesome and there are some great bargains out there.

I have a 2008 Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD V6 (I am told its a Merecedes engine) - its a great car with bags of oomph, but at a cost !
In normal business use (mixture of Motorway & Urban) I get 25mpg and towing 18mpg (Twin axle Lunar Delta) - trust me I am light footed, I used to get 44mpg out of my Volvo S80 on the same usage.
Other running costs can be high as well new Tyres come in at £220 each and I have just been quoted £430 (discounted) for a 50,000 mile service.
Don't get me wrong its a great tow car but if you are seriously thinking of getting one just be aware of some of the running costs !
Cheers
Jon

In response to the above the 3.0CRD V6 is the same engine as the 300C chrysler
the floor pan engine and gearbox of the 300C are all taken from the E Class mercedes so you are correct with the statement however unfortunately as it is the outgoing series E-class it has only a five speed box where in my opinion the jeep would have benefitted by having a six speed or even the new seven speed box which would have reduced fuel consumption when towing. But as it is American fuel consumption is or was not that high on the agenda when they outsourced engine and box

Anyone got anything good to say about Jeep cherokees ??

No. I would rather push my Landrovers than drive a jeep.

Seriously though, check depreciation as it is horrific on a Jeep
