Happy New Year All !!

Anyhow, I have finally decided on my next tow car which is the Jeep Cherokee 2.5 Sport (Diesel).(2002)

Anyone out there any mpg figures from owning one as I have read and heard varying reports, some say good and some bad.

The way I see it is that if it does what you want and it appeals then what the heck ! There is always a trade off with these things as there isn't anything that ticks all the boxes so any feedback would be welcome.

Thanks all

Tom

Hi Tom, I run a cherokee ltd manual, On a long run towing the van (Abbey Adventura) I return 28mpg roughly, at 3500 revs, which equates to about 75mph (on the continent), much above this and it drinks fuel,I've had this car for 2 years since new can say that it's probably the best motor I've towed with, I,ve been towing vans with all sorts of different vehicles both for pleasure and professionaly for about 35 years

Tom. I run a jeep cherokee. It is ,however a petrol model. I dont want to poop on your party at all, but I was told by a jeep dealer to steer well clear of the diesels because they have an uncanny knack for blowing head gaskets. He said in 15 years as a jeep specialist H'es never had to change a head gasket on a petrol model, nor has he ever sold a gasket for a petrol. Just a thought.

Tom, Go for it, a friend of mine has had one since 1997 and apart from a new water pump and a set of shocks, the car has been great, goes like a rocket ( BMW engine ) and very good on fuel, He did have a small problem with the back axle, we were driving up to scotland towing his boat, at about half way the car started to behave very strangely, when going round sharp corners/roundabouts, the back end was all over the place,( bit like a druken caravanner ), anyway to cut a very long story short, it turns out that the clutch type plates in the back axle had locked-up, i phoned my mate who works on Jeeps and he told us to find a large car park, do a lot of tight figure of eights, and when you get home, change the oil in said axle, sure enough it worked, a tip to keep in mind, Keep it Diesel, i would'nt have a petrol car as a gift.

Jeff.

Tom

I had one for 2 yrs and did over 60,000 miles in it from new. Never had any problems with it and the only work ever done was normal service. Great car all round and built like a brick.

I averaged about 28mpg on a run but never towed with it. Would still have it if it was not written off when it was rear ended on the motorway by 2 fully loaded transits.

The only down side I ever had with it was that it is not as big inside as you first think.

Thanks for your comments they are appreciated. My original thoughts were around the 28 mpg mark solo and 25 ish towing so I can live with that, as for interior room they are as you say adequate which is not a problem for us ( we are kidless now....yipee!!)

but that aside I didn't want to buy a fuel guzzling monster that I had to plan my routes via the fuel stations..

Thanks once again

Tom
