jockey wheel

my jockey wheel is centraly mounted in the A frame ,and for reasons i wont go into the 2 halves came apart , is there some special knack to winding the 2 halves back together , because no matter how much i turn the handle the thread wont bite , i have tried turning both directions

If you can get it strait it should start, the only other problem might be that it has damaged the start of the thread, ideally take the top half out of the A frame and make sure that they screw together freely on the ground,or you might have pushed some crap up into the thread quite easily with out knowing...

did it have some weight on when it came apart, or was it moving ?...

good suggestions there from sproket, also the tread on the jockey wheel is a normal right hand thread so clockwise screws the wheel up so conversly anticlockwise screws it down. the last van we had did the samething more times than not because the jockey wheel allways seemed to be a bit short in the shaft so on a downward slope by the time the van was level the tread had popped out. one way to aviod this was to first wind down the wheel so far then set the front corner steadies then wind up the wheel drop the whole shaft to the btm then carry on winding down the wheel untill level. when disembarking do the samething in reverse.

oh nearly forgot how to get it back in again:> lift the outer shaft near to the top so the lower half is clear of the ground when positioned vertically shove the lower half into the upper half and turn slowly anti clockwise untill you feel it click on the thread then turn the handle clockwise this should engage the thread and wind the wheel up. if it does not the thread may be damaged, it sounds complicated at first but after a few dozen times it becomes really easy.

SWMBO did the same thing last year.

The problem with the centrally mounted JW is that unless the wheel is exactly straight in line with the whole outfit it can foul the brake rod.

When that happens , as it did for us, I had to jack up the front quite high to free the bottom half of the JW. Once I could get it back in straight the two halves screwed together easily.

thanks for the replies every one ,i think the trouble was trying to keep it in a straight line the wheel kept rolling forward ,so i have now found a brick which i am going to place under the shaft keeping the wheel clear of the ground ,thanks again Joe
