I am not aware that it takes into account traffic etc however it is excellent and taking you the longest route possible to a destination. Try using Google in Bath and see how far you get. LOL!

Generally it’s pretty good but like everything else I use it as a guide . Bath? Been caught out years ago on the steep side roads which narrowed to 6’ 6. “. Thanks to advanced road signs missed it!

When I check out a Google route it generally gives three opinions and estimated journey times. Looking at the routes will show amber or red if there are hold ups. Zooming in will show things like traffic accident, road works etc. Sometime it will identify the incident as input from Waze.

This lunchtime I checked on Google before leaving and it showed the best route via a B road which then joins the main A road further south. Now yesterday the B road was still closed as it has been for three months. So I decided to take a slightly longer more congested route along the A4 and A350. Blow me after I’d selected my lane into an island for the A4 and the alternate B road I saw the B road fully open to traffic. So Google updated in less than 24 hours.

PS we don’t need Google to find the pub, just to show any congestion before we leave. Coming back we don’t care.

Google maps gives me traffic live data, ie, accidents, slow traffic etc. very useful around my area of the M1, j13 to j15. My Santa Fe gives me traffic and accident only when on a plotted route. Updates to SatNav about £40 , from E bay.

Maybe you need to check your settings - Google always checks traffic conditions when I use it and usually selects the quickest route.

I have just checked the directions to the daughter's residence and Google takes us down all the back roads which are slower. The quicker route is to use the A road, but Google shows both routes with the same amount of time for the trip? The only difference is that using the A road, the journey through the 30mph zone is about a mile longer. It won't let me select the A road route.

In all the years I have hardly ever used Google maps for a journey, so I am not familiar with the app. I am not sure how to access any settings etc.

If two routes are shown but with the same journey time, it means the difference between the two is just seconds as both journeys will be rounded to the nearest minute.

It sounds like you have it set for shortest rather than quickest - some satnavs also have an option for most economical.

It came up with as the quickest way is via the narrow country roads. Is there any way you can select the alternative route as it appears not many settings on the app?

I only use Google Maps on the PC, not the phone app - but use Waze app on my phone.

There's some sharing of traffic data from Google to Waze and sharing of user journey time from Waze to Google.

On one particular route, Google directs me along a shorter route but with lots of roundabouts - I ignore it, particularly when towing , and go the route I know to be quicker albeit a little further.

Normally when Google works out the route it thinks you want, before you accept the suggestion you can move the way points (White spots) Google has created to different roads and it will recalculate based on your modifications.

I generally use google maps on my PC to work out routes to unfamiliar locations, and if necessary modify the route before I open my phone app which then up uses the planned route.

Google Maps also does allow you choose some general routing criteria, Shortest, Quickest, avoid certain types of features such as ferries, motorways and tolls.

If using my phone I see Googles recommended route in dark blue with estimated journey time. It will often show two other optional routes in light blue. Touch one and it turns dark blue and press Start and your phone starts navigating. As I said in my earlier post if the country lane route is at national 60 moh limit it assumes to some extent you will drive towards the limit. But the sensible driver may only drive between 30-40 mph, Wheras if on the A road option you may be driving nearer the 60, or even 50 mph posted limits.

I only “pull” Google route options around to select my own route when using the computer. Having Essential Tremor in my right arm and using my phone screen would see me visiting some interesting areas far from the intended destination.
