Kerbweights

Only as a rough guideline. Kerbweight data is always very approximate. If it's important to know accurately, the only reliable method is to actually weigh the car.

Moley

thanks for that, i know it will be helpful to many people

theres always a smart arse trying to say otherwise.

having a rough idea is always helpful without going to a weight bridge

A rough idea should be adequate but some people seem to want to be able to calculate their weight ratio to the nearest percent.

If the cap fits, looks like you can wear it ?? smart arse

I don't seem to recall all of your posts associated with Towing, Driving and Safety. The link gives very approximate guidelines, wouldn't like to tell the insurance company It was OK cuddles told me !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Moley,

The info for my car in this web site is WRONG!

A4 Avant 2 litre Tdi Auto, site says 1510kg Actual is 1618Kg

I concur with Lutz, get it weighed, its the only acurate way to find out kerbweight!

I have yet to see a car which is not heavier than the manufacturer's published kerbweight.

All I was saying is that the information on the website Moley was referring to must be treated with some reservation as it is neither complete nor accurate. Like most other websites such as www.whattowcar.com, they can only be used as a rough guideline, but in the end only manufacturer's specifications (and perhaps even actual weighbridge results if you're really close to the limit) will determine whether you are legal or not.

Does it hurt to have a second opinion, .neil? Might save your life or someone else's. Or even your bank balance. You don't appear to have been on the forum long, judging by a search, so perhaps you may not know this, Lutz is one of the few on the forum, that could be described as an expert. Having been in the "motor world" for a very long time indeed and with connections, should he be not able to answer something, he is a guiding light on this forum. So I suppose he is a smart ass. We would do well to have asses as smart as his.

BTW, thanks Moley, I haven't looked at the site yet, but anything that gives out information freely is most welcome. It is at least a starting point.

i have been on this forum well over a year which has nothing to do with anything

i know what my car and caravan weigh and i know everything there is to know about towing in a safe way

your right that a second opinion doesnt hurt, but some times on this forum some people like to slat every little thing said ,just for the sake of it

i dont feel the need to do that ,and thats why i dont respond to every little thing

i found that moleys site said the same as my hand book for my car ,so it wasnt far off

but if you want a rough guide moleys site is a good help

I have a cheap easy way of regularly checking the kerbweight of my car.

Although our local council recycles various items the don't include "white/office" paper so for six months we accumulate all the junk mail we can't return pre-paid and then take it to Smurfit, our local paper re-processor. I always fill up with fuel on the way.

They weigh us in and out - the out reading being the kerbweight of the car (to the UK C&U definition) as the car is completely empty then - the reading is always 1280 or 1300kg, the scale divisions being 20kg.

This supports Lutz's point about actual always being more than published kerbweight - my car is 1254, add the towbar +26, add the top 10% of fuel +4, take off the driver -68 means it should weigh 1216 but is at least 64 higher.

And it's free!

As the towbar is a permanent fitting, it obviously increases the kerbweight. Kerbweight is not an ex-works figure but the actual weight of the vehicle when empty. It is therefore a variable as distinct from max. GVW etc. which is an absolute value that cannot be changed without approval from the vehicle manufacturer.

I quite agree, .neil. There are those on this forum that prefer to berate another's choice. Don't have an end bathroom, they take up too much room, don't have a fixed bed they take up too much room, don't have a twin axle they take up too much room....etc etc etc. Most of these topics are down too personal preference. What is sublime to one family may be horrendous for another. However, in the technical dept there are rules and regs, bad advice can be lethal and as such venturing into this topic may have repercussions. Lutz was only trying to highlight that the chosen site was not totally accurate and as such should be viewed that way and not that he didn't want anyone using it. There are those on the forum, who are, for want of a better word, beginners. The site that Dave mentions, would be a good place to start for them, but they may not know it, they may take it that those published figures are absolute, which would be wrong. You might know better, I might know better, but they may not.
