Kia Sedona Tyres

I've had this Sedona for about two months and have noticed that the tyres are "old" in age , almost four years old. SO I'm now going to change all five and would welcome suggestions for the best make / type of tyre to put on. Will be towing for about 3000 miles this year aboslute max. Iam used to paying about £90 for Goodyear tyres for my old Rover 75, but this sort of price for 5 will be very painful on my credit card.

Neil,

No experience of Kia - but Kumho tyres have just been appointed MO status for some new Mercedes models - so I guess they're reasonable quality.

Second vote for Kuhumo here. They come highly reccommended in my car owner's club while Yokohama's don't have the best of reps. Kuhumos are also meant to be quite hard-wearing so you get plenty of miles out them.

Michelin's every time for me.I had 2 fitted last week and the fitter said that Kumho? and Yokohama's are not known for their quality.

It might be worth finding out what the OE tyres were on the vehicle.

My tyre dealer made the point that the Sedona is heavy on front tyres - he was happy to fit Michelins or whatever but they would still wear rapidly. I took his advice - Maxis which he fits to local taxi firms using Sedonas - and am now on my second set of front tyres ( changed at 24,000 miles ) but still with the first set on the rear.

Neil,

OE = Original Equipment = what the manufacturer fitted.

Unless it was a performance car, or for certain other reasons, in which case the tyres carry a manufacturer "approval" mark (AU for Audi. MO. MB or AMO for Mercedes, A for BMW, N0 for Porsche, etc), then OE tyres will be good quality (but nothing special) bought for the lowest price by the manufacturer.

I'm not surprised that Jonathan's tyre fitter was dismissive of Kumho - it's only recently that they've got MO approval from Mercedes - but I was surprised that the fitter didn't think much of Yokohama. My old Honda NSX was factory fitted with Yokohama AVS tyres and then (mid 90's) you really couldn't buy a better Z-rated tyre.

Rob just to pick your brains a little more. The sedona is unlikely to break the sound barrier its a bit of a tank speed wise so would T rated tyres be suitable as opposed to H rated tyres and should i accept 96's or something a little stronger ?

really appreciate this advice its invaluable !

Neil,

Should you fit a summer tyre rated for a speed lower than the car can achieve? Never.

The cost saving will be minimal, I've got this feeling that it would invalidate your insurance or give them wiggle room in case of an accident, and it's possibly illegal too.

T is rated to 118, H to 130 mph - and I doubt if you could (easily) buy a T rated tyre in a Kia size - most cars can excede 118 mph - so why would a manufacturer make a T rated tyre?

H rated Kumho will be around

We have had our Sedona nearly two years and they are very hard on the front tyres. The trick we have found is to have the tracking checked more often that you normally would.

We use a medium priced tyre called Hankook which my local garage recommended. We find they last as long as the more expensive ones.

Another trick is to get a tyre fitter to change your front and back tyres over when the fronts begin to wear
