Please could anyone help with a route from Calais to Lake Garda. are the motorways hilly?

Depending on which way you go its not a particularly arduous as far as hills are concerned. I would use the Fern Pass and then overthe Brenner, the latter being a stunning motorway which drops you down the eastern side of Lake Garda. The Fern Pass whilst not particularly steep is twisty and not motorway standard. You could ge to the Brenner via Munich but its the long way round. May I ask what sort of outfit you have?

An alternative route to Davids is the way we drive there. Calais through Belgium to Bitburg then Black Forest proceed to Bodensee along the north shore over the Austrian Border to Innsbruck and then down the Brenner to Garda. This entails 3 stops on the way.
I thought I would point out, that Dianne route, whilst very scenic entails a few more hilly parts a lot more single carriageways and a extra toll to go through a tunnel in Austria somewhere after Bludenz.This toll is extra on top of the normal 10 day pass you would have to buy anyway when going into Austria.
If you were going to the western side of lake Garda, I would suggest A route that that followed the top end of France/Belgium Luxembourg [no tolls] and cheap fuel. then alas drop down to metz to basle, alas tolls, through Switzerland [2 vignettes] and into Italy that way. Sure you pay more tolls but you save on time and fuel, so money wise not much in it. There are a couple of steep gradients but nothing a modern set up cannot take in its stride.

We actually do not drive up or down any large hills and except for the road out of and to the Black Forest it is all motor way till a small section at the end of the Bodensee and then back on motorway right through to Lake Garda. Tolls are not a lot of money and Fuel is a lot cheaper than in France.
Dont want to come across as nick picking,but the northern shore of lake constance[bodensee] is 50 miles of single carriageway after that you do get back onto m/way but as i said earlier there is a stretch of single carriage which lead to a toll tunnel,[last time it was 7 euro.s then afterwards, yes m/way all the way.Add this to the more popular A roads that would link you across the black forest, then i would say 100 miles of A roads atleast through tourist areas is not what i would call a small section...

2006 and 2008. the alberg tunnel bit cannot have change and that is 15km of tunnel, with tolls. and A roads from the border into Austria about 25 miles all in of A road.
The bit around lake contance, well when you said the northern shore I assumed you meant just that the road hugs the shore, but maybe you meant the road a few KM north of that, which could have changed but again was single carriageway before.
The black forest area Ditto single carriageway.
More than welcome to hear certain roads have been updated to daulcarriageway from the single.
