Laptop television

Has anyone got one of those gizmos that slot into your laptop and allows you to use it as a TV.

I can play dvd's on my laptop and if I could use it as a tv it would be a bonus when caravanning.

It would be a lot lighter than lugging a portable tv and dvd player.

Any advice and possible recommendations would be welcome.

I've used this method for about a year now and it works perfectly. I use a Hauppauge unit available from PC World. I found the laptop speakers didn't give enough volume so added a pair of powered external ones.

Paul,

Is your unit analogue or suitable for Freeview TV? I see that both are available and have been wondering which would be most suitable for caravan use.

PaulT,

does the unit come with its own antenna,if it does,is there also provision for plugging in an external antenna.

I am thinking about poor reception in certain areas.

Hi David and John

Mine is the analogue version. In hindsight I should have bought the digital one. However, in certain places I can get Sky news and some other satellite stations - don't ask me how!

It has an aerial socket in it which is connected into the 'van TV socket using a normal co-ax lead. The TV signal gets into the laptop via the USB port. It comes with all the software and on arrival at a site I just press the relevant buttons and it seeks out all the local tv stations just like an ordinary tv - simple!

The Hauppauge DEC1100-T does exactly what you need. It's a digital TV receiver which connects to a PC via a USB port. It'll also work as a personal video recorder using the PC's hard drive so you can record programmes while you're out. The receiver gets all freeview channels so will continue working after the analogue is switched off (2008-2012). I'm not sure of the price, about

Agree with that, still 16 in stock.

John.b.

I have had similar problems as yourself.Looking for a product and it says zero stock. You then log back on an hour or so later and there is loads of stock for the same item.

I think it may well be a case of the company updating there system and getting more stock.

It could also be as simple as typing one letter/number wrongly as I have done.

I have purchased a tv card for my laptop and its a great piece of kit,all in a laptop..amazing..but go for the digital version.

My hubby got me the Hauppauge dec

sorry ,hit the wrong key.Hauppauge dec1100-t for my birthday.

Re my earlier "wish" that I'd bought a digital version. Make sure that the area you are going to is in a terestrial digital area. Only about 75% of the country can receive it against a 99% coverage for Sky. It's probably better to stick with the analogue version.

PaulT,

good point, never really thought about that and as we tend to use sites in scotland that could be a problem, amongst the mountains and glens etc.

I'll need to give it some more thought, thanks again.

Forget analogue versions, they'll soon be obsolete.

The analogue signal will start to be switched off, in Scotland, from 2008 and be complete by 2011/12. Areas which can't now get "freeview" won't EVER be able to get digital terrestrial signals.

If you caravan regularly in these areas, digital satellite is the only way to go.

Hauppauge do a PC / Satellite Receiver at about
