We are doing our first trip to Italy with a large two wheel van. Can anyone suggest a general route to either Como or Sondrio (Lombard) in Italy. Wide roads, low gradient, cheaper tolls if possible. If you could pass on your wisdom and advice. That would be great. Steve

high Stephen, which ferry crossing are you doing?as this could make the choice of routes differ.

In reality and working backwards, your route into Italy should involve entering Italy from the top[Switzerland A2]This is the shortest, and cheapest route, alas all routes will mean some type of hill climb. once in Italy leave the m/way after the second short tunnel, as this takes you around como rather than through it.

This route becomes the SS342,you are heading towards lecco,at the junction with the SS36 you get on that road it takes you through lecco up the side of the lake to sondrio.

From France there are numerous routes you could take, i suggest any route you fancy that scouts across the top of France be it via Luxembourg or across to Riems as a good choice, you need to decide tolls or less tolls. good luck

Hi Stephen

I came back from Italy last week.I came back via Como. The route I took was calais-lille-mons(belgium)-namur-luxemburg-metz-nancy-mulhouse- tnen into germany to avoid going through basel(using the A5)-luzern -lugano this route is toll free. the fuel in luxemburg was _1.11 The route from Nancy-mulhouse is dual and single carriage there is a wineding section between thann and bussang on the N66 but it was not a problem I have a sorento amd my van is 6 meters. I went through the gottard tunnel at 6 in the morning with no queues going and coming back I went through the tunnel on a thursday afternoon with 30 mins of queues. There are plenty of Le Clerc and carrefour supermarkets for cheaper fuel on this route in france. The N66 is a very scenic route going through the Parc de Ballon. My stopovers where at service areas on route. however next yearwe will be using a camping municipal in Thann just off the route N66

Hope this helps

Hi Percy, Hope you dont mind me contacting you.

We have decided to go abroad with the van for the first time next summer.

Im looking at the shortest ferry route. Ive been on the Norfolkline Dover-Dunkerque website and the current ferry prices seem very good hence i might need to book asap.

We are heading for relatives in Germany a place called Neustadt an der Weinstra
