Hi

Advice needed please. Want to buy 15 or 17inch flat screen combi tv & dvd player but totaly confused as to what make to buy. Can anybody suggest good make to buy. Quite prepared to spend a bit more to get a better quality, would also like digital ready if possible. Not bothered about HD as I'm told this will be superceded by something called blue angel or something like that anyway.

Hi John,

First of all I don't think you have a great deal of choice going down the integrated route. There are plenty of integrated DVD LCD players in the sub 10" format, but 15" and above is dominated by separate systems.

You are obviously familiar with major quality manufacturers like Hitachi, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sharp and Sony - and any others I've missed out. And I'd be tempted to do some web research on the relevant technical review forums.

By the way, is there anything wrong with a separate LCD TV and small format DVD player - particularly because:

The issue for you is that two competing systems for the next generation of DVD player are playing out their hands now - HD DVD and blu-ray DVD. It's probably a good time to delay or buy a cheap DVD player - and upgrade later if you see he need.

Hello John,

I would agree with the other respondants about makes and the advent of Blu-ray etc but I must add a word of caution.

If you intend to run the set from the caravan 12V system, you may run into voltage supply problems. Caravan 12V is usually anything but 12V in fact a range of between 10 to 14.5V is possible depending on the state of the battery and whether the charger is on. Most of these sets are designed for use with computer grade mains adaptor that produces a very stable and regulated 12Vdc. The set may not take kindly to the variations found in caravans.

Specifically point out to your TV supplier that you want it to work in a caravan, then if it does not work then they are obliged to eithere supply one that does, or refund as the goods are not fit for purpose.

If you are using a mains hookup, then there should be no problem.

Quite a number of contributers report good results from some makes, so search the forum and you may find what you are looking for.

John

I just recently bought a Bush 14" lcd tv/dvd combo off ebay for use in the caravan. Works great with good picture and sound.

Definately the lower end of the market, but hey, it is only for use in the caravan.

Rob & John L

Thanks all for your advice (sorry about the blue angel bit of senior moment that). Have taken your advice and decided to go route of plain LCD tv and seperate freeview box and DVD player. Quite keen on a Toshiba 15VL63 looking on net to get best price. Seen one on e-bay at

We recently bought a..

(but not from J Lewis) and are realy thrilled with the results and ease of use.

I wasnt interested in going as far as digital and feel that a 'box' could easily be added afterwards.

An arial booster with a standard mast mounted arial certainly gives us a brilliant reception and with a wall bracket that allows easily removable storage for security
Hi,

A word of warning:-

We damaged our first LCD tv in the boot first time out, The box it came in was too bulky but - despite being very carefull packing something poked into the screen and ruined it.

We then bought a padded bag from Bags2cover, it is padded but also has a solid screen protector to stop things damaging the screen, noy had a problem in transit since!

Cheers

John,

We have used for several years a Thomson 12v/240 portable.

This year as we were taking our 5yo grandson on a trip I purchased an inexpensive portable DVD player, you know the sort with a 7 inch screen, via e bay for him to watch his dvd,s on. Anyway we found we could plug it in to our portable, close the lid and sit back and enjoy a dvd playing over our TV. Not particularly Hi Tech but near perfect results at minmum cost and minimum risk whilst on site or traveling to and from.

Rgds
