Any one ever hooked up an extra leisure battery to run along with their normal battery in the van. Just a point the battery I have aquired is out of a HGV and is 1050 Amps but still 12v, anybody see any drama's with this set up. It's just that I will be going to a ralley for 3 weeks and begrudge buying a solar panel if I don't have to.

make sure you get the terminals the right way round or you will make it into 24v volt system, which will fry you 12v items.

just a note about putting such a high power battery along side a normal one is that the high power one might draw the power from the lover one causing damage to it, i would sujst just swaping the batterys over not running them together.

oh one more thing would the charger in you van be up to the job of charging such a big battery,

The batteries would have to be wired in series to become 24 volts. Getting the terminals "the wrong way round" would result in a short circuit and cause the batteries to get hot and even explode.

And putting a higher powered battery next to a lower powered one will cause the higher powered battery to be drawn down to a lower power similar to that of the existing lower powered one.

When putting two batteries together they should ideally be of the same size (power) and age.

what i ment by wrong way round was that linking the in seris would cause 24v and parallel would be a 12v system with a higher ampage, you would only cause a short circuit by reversing the polarity, or linking the possitive and negitive terminals of the same battery.

Thanks for the advice fella's, I won't be charging off my caravan charger as I plan to use the battery just for the essentials, you know water pump etc.

Hello Barry,

As others have said, there can be serious problems when running batteries in parallel.

I really think the safest solution is to use a single battery at a time, and change it when necessary.
