Just read an article here in the technical section about levelling and was surprised to see that a few take the handbrake off the caravan after levelling, though I always use chocks I have never taken the handbrake off for added safety. To those of you that use this method of releasing the handbrake after levelling why is this? Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul

I don't release the handbrake when on site as it allows the 'van to move around too much in the wind etc. Plus it's not worth it just for a week. But I do leave it off once it's parked and clamped at home. This prevents the cables from stretching which could alter their performance. It also relaxes the springs in the system and prevents the brake pads from binding onto the drums.

Paul - the steadies will stop the van moving, provided they're firmly down. I always release the handbrake for the same reasons as Mick says, and in very cold weather it can help to stop the brakes freezing on.
