Route from Le Havre to Freiburg area

End of August we're doing this route, with caravan. Choices are:
Route north of Paris to Chalons sur Marne then on through the Vosges, Breisach.
Route south of Paris to Troyes then Belfort, Mulhouse.
Any tips for best route, mostly avoiding tolls, and more scenic? We're not in a hurry, having 4 weeks for our trip. We return via Caen.
Thanks

Is there a reason why you cannot do Dover, ferry or Eurotunnel? Belgium then Luxembourg.

Distance must be similar, no tolls, save on ferry.

We used to take Dover Dunkirk route thru Lille, Belgium, Luxembourg, but now the fares are much cheaper with Brittany Ferries. We've booked our crossings. We want to visit some places on the way.

Understood. In recent years we have used the tunnel as Marj does nor sail at all well. Also we got a great deal with Tesco club card.
